The grand old party, in an effort to make up for their lack of coherent issues, has been condemning and criticising the current government in the hope of getting voter support. However, when this did not seem to work in their favour, and instead led to a backlash, Rahul Gandhi led Congress decided to prey on the poor by offering them money in exchange for their support, in the form of the Nyuntam Aay Yojana (NYAY). However, in the hurry of pleasing the voters, the Congress party has been ambiguous about the scheme. Rahul Gandhi and Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala have announced 2 contradictory versions of the scheme.
According to this ambitious scheme, 20% of the families in India, which comprise of the poorest in economic terms, will be beneficial. This amounts to 5 crore families in India, consisting of 25 crore people. Rahul Gandhi has announced the minimum income line of Rs 12,000 per family, on a monthly basis. In furtherance to that, he has stated that every family will get at least 72,000 rupees every year. Competing with NDA government’s PM-KISAN scheme, wherein PM Modi is in the process of transferring Rs 6,000 every year in every farmer’s account, Rahul Gandhi has decided to transfer the same amount on a monthly basis. This is a 3.6 lakh crore campaign aimed at pleasing the lower income strata of the country. However, the minimum income guarantee does not have any statistical backing and it is unclear from whose coffers is Rahul Gandhi going to cough up the money.
“The 20% poorest of poor families would get Rs 72,000 directly transferred in their accounts. This is the final assault on poverty,” said Gandhi.
Rahul Gandhi has explained the methodology as a “top up scheme”. The scheme will reap benefits up till the cut off line of Rs 12,000 per month. As Rahul Gandhi explained it, “If a family earned Rs 6,000 per month, the government would give Rs 6,000 to help the family reach the minimum income mark of Rs 12,000.”
However, Randeep Surjewala has claimed a different story at a press conference at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi. He has categorically stated that the minimum income scheme is not a top up scheme and that every demarcated family irrespective of its monthly income will get Rs 6,000 a month (72,000 a year).

The voters are visibly confused due to this. The Congress leaders in their excitement of making tall promises have not even discussed the scheme amongst themselves. They cant even be trusted to formulate and implement a scheme, let alone actually executing a 3.6 lakh crore scheme. This is all just a clever campaign to please the unsuspecting economically weak voters. If given the chance to implement it, either the scheme will become a huge burden on the taxpaying voters, increasing the price of state commodities or like most of the Congress schemes in the past, will backfire thoroughly.
