AMU Students’ Union opposes ban on separatist outfit Jamaat-e-Islami

The Central government has started a massive crackdown on terror-sympathizers and separatists operating from Kashmir. Be it keeping the separatists behind the bars, or withdrawing their security covers, the NDA government has been firm in acting against the separatist elements in the valley.

However, what has left the terrorists and their sympathisers aghast is the way the Modi government has acted against the separatist outfit Jamaat-e-Islami. This organisation has been found guilty of inciting separatism among Kashmiri students, apart from financing terror operations against the Indian forces, as well as the Indian citizens. Not only have their offices been raided and sealed, but also their administrative staff has been arrested and their bank accounts, with black money amounting to millions have been seized.

Apart from the Kashmiri opportunists, it seems that someone else is devastated by the recent turn of events as well. The AMU Students’ Union wailed on the outfit being banned and expressed their anguish on the same.

AMU Students’ Union president M Salman Imtiaz said, “The ban on socio-religio-political outfit Jamaat-e-Islami has come as a shock. Jamaat is neither an underground outfit nor a terror outfit. It has been part of the electoral process in the state. It is only after mass rigging of elections in 1989 that Jamaat abandoned the electoral process. We, at AMU, take strong notice of the repulsive response against the ban in Jammu and Kashmir and want the government of the day to come clean on charges against Jammat.”

Then, like a classic left-liberal, he further added, “As BJP rule is coming to an end and elections are just a few weeks away, the ban on Jamaat appears to be a decision that has little to do with unlawful activities and more to do with the hardcore Hindutva policies. The religious leadership in Kashmir, civil society and traders have also condemned the ban as politically motivated.”

Ever since its inception, AMU has been notorious for its regressive, pro-separatist attitude. Be it singing paeans for slain terrorists Burhan Wani and Mannan Wani, or campaigning against the removal of Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s portrait from the Central Hall, the university students have been indulging in anti-national activities. Their hostility to progressive thoughts and ideas is nothing new if one knows well about the case of Prof. Ramchandra Siras.

As such, it is natural if they feel aghast about action against Islamic terrorists. However, BJP leaders didn’t take their barbs against them lying down. BJP MP Satish Gautam said, “It is sad that AMUSU has asked for lifting the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami. Our soldiers are dying on the border and AMU students are protesting against the ban on the outfit,” Gautam further said. “The mentality of AMU students is being exposed every day. They are against ‘Bharat Mata’ and raise anti-national slogans regularly. I will speak to the varsity’s VC about this and demand action against the students involved in this.”

It is time the government acted against such separatist elements as well, who are spoiling the ethos of our educational institutions with their vicious propaganda.
