According to media reports, BJP is planning to field former cricketer Virender Sehwag from Rohtak seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha election. It seems that the former Indian cricketer is all set to start a new inning in politics as well.
Giving ticket to the former swashbuckling opener from Rohtak is an interesting choice as Rohtak is considered to be a bastion of the Congress party. A notable fact is that beside the Modi wave in 2014, BJP had a tough time on Rohtak Lok Sabha seat and the incumbent Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda defeated the BJP candidate Om Parkash Dhankar with a huge margin of more than 1.7 Lakh votes. Virender Sehwag’s name is also included in the panel of probable candidates from Haryana for the upcoming general elections.
Rohtak has a Jat majority and Sehwag’s candidature will also serve the caste equation, as the ‘Multan Ka Sultan’ too comes from the same community. Interestingly, Sehwag has time and again praised the policies and ideology of the saffron party.
Moreover, some media reports also claimed that his opening partner and one of the heroes of the 2011 ICC World Cup, Gautam Gambhir may join the BJP. Gautam may contest election from Delhi on BJP ticket. In a similar way, Gautam too had praised the BJP policies in many instances. Earlier, the former team Indian opener took to the twitter to help an Army veteran, after Gambhir spotted him begging at Connaught Place, New Delhi.
Not only that, in a surprise to many, Gambhir fiercely criticized BCCI, CoA and CAB for allowing cricketer cum parliamentarian Mohammad Azharuddin to ring the iconic bell at the Eden Gardens before the start of the T20 series between India and West Indies. Apart from this, Gautam Gambhir had also extended financial aid to ailing boxer Dingko Singh and also asked others to support the Indian boxing champion and Asian Games gold medalist. Gambhir’s love for the nation is unprecedented and impeccable.
Earlier on January 2, veteran actress Moushumi Chatterjee joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in the presence of senior party leaders including BJP General Secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya, and Mukul Roy in the national capital. The General Secretary expressed hope that Chatterjee’s presence will boost the prospects of the party in West Bengal. The veteran actress has worked in over 100 films, and now she is set to start her new political innings with a new party (earlier she contested on INC’s ticket in 2004 Lok Sabha election). Chatterjee asserted that she wants to work for the BJP and seeks to strengthen it. The Bengal actress is a staunch supporter and admirer of PM Modi. Also, many artists including Rupa Ganguly, Rimi Sen, and Babul Supriyo have already joined the BJP, and now Moushumi Chatterjee seems to have followed suit.
There is further speculation that Sufi singer Hans Raj Hans may join the party as well. A media report stated that Hans Raj Hans may contest the general election from Ambala, Punjab on a BJP ticket. The joining of these imminent personalities to the party will further strengthen the BJP cadre.
