Foreign funded non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have long been a problem for India’s growth and development. Earlier governments used to face problems in clamping down on their activities or they had perhaps given them a free hand in order to boost their own political ambitions. All this changed with the Bharatiya Janata Party government under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, who came to power in 2014. In the last couple of years, numerous steps have been taken to ensure the closure of the NGOs which indulged in anti-India activities such as supporting naxals and indulging in conversions. NGOs are one of the major source of Maoists funding. Maoists carry out their sinister activities through foreign funded NGOs. It is no hidden secret that many Maoist are dying silent death because of the crackdown in their funding. All this plot to assassinate PM Modi is the result of frustration of not getting foreign funding anymore.
The letter of plot to assassinate PM Modi was seized from arrested urban Maoist, Rona Wilson. Rona Wilson is the secretary of the Committee for the Release of Political Prisoners (CRPP). CRPP is under government scanner for providing funding to armed Maoist groups. The letter signed by ‘R’, Pune police suspects it is the initials of Rona Wilson’s name. The letter further asks Ultra Leftist United Students Democratic Front (USDF) activists to to help to organize protests across all the BJP ruled states. USDF is also under government scanner for funding armed Maoist groups.
There is no doubt that there has been a significant decrease in naxal funding and number of naxals surrendered has also increased. Crackdown on NGO’s has broken the backbone of the naxal movement in jungles and urban Maoist movement in cities. This letter shows how much dangerous these NGOs and Maoist are and government’s crackdown on them is reasonable. There is always a direct link between NGOs, protest and unrest. In 2017 Tamil Nadu based NGOs received maximum foreign funding and now in 2017 few Tamil Nadu based NGOs are suspected behind inciting the anti-Sterlite protest which claimed 13 lives. It is also suspected that many NGOs were behind March 20 Nation-wide dalit strike.
A staggering 30 lakh NGOs operate in the country of which merely ten percent file their balance sheets, while the rest are at liberty to use the funds without accountability. The funds received by them from the government are a staggering 900 crore rupees coupled besides the thousands of crores they receive from foreign contributions. NGOs receive approximately Rs 27,000 crore in domestic and foreign grants. According to the Home Ministry, there are approximately 25,000 active organisations registered under The Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), 2010. Records suggest that NGOs received foreign contributions to the tune of Rs 18,065 crore for various social, cultural, economic, educational and religious activities in 2016-17.The Foreign Contribution Regulations Act (FCRA) had rattled these NGOs and had contributed heavily to closure of some 14,000 plus NGOs within a year of its coming into effect.
The online portal launched by Home Minister Rajnath Singh on June 1 is doing its bit in order to ensure close monitoring of the flow of foreign contributions to the registered NGOs. “It gives them the capacity to make data-driven and evidence-based decisions regarding the compliance of the provisions of the FCRA”, according to the ministry. The analytical tool facilitates government officials in scrutinizing the source of funds and their actual use in the country. PM Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh are ensuring that government agencies hit a home run with these tools at their disposal.
India can develop without these foreign funded NGOs. These NGOs are nothing but modern day’s colonizers with their own vested interests. When The Frustrated Indian touched 100,000 mark, a gentleman offered TFI’s founder Atul Mishra in starting an NGO with the same name. He said it will be a big business. And that gentleman was blocked immediately!
