West Bengal ruled by Trinamool Congress continues to be a blot on democratic principles. TMC’s relentless assaults on democratic set-up, institutions and free speech have ensured a reign of terror in the state. To continue its iron grip on West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee led TMC has devised a new way of ensuring victory. According to the data released by West Bengal State Election Commission, during the recently held Panchayat elections TMC has managed to win more than 20,000 seats unopposed. That is a whopping 34 percent of all the Panchayat seats where apparently nobody contested TMC candidates.
In an era where EVMs, tight security in voting booths and transparency in election process have rendered the manipulative ways of yore to turn the elections in your favour (such as booth capturing) useless, TMC has come out with its new strategy to murder democracy. By any means necessary, but preferably with violence, do not let your opponents even file nominations. In the run-up to panchayat elections and during the filing stage, a number of incidents were reported where TMC goons had assaulted candidates on their way to file nomination papers. Since West Bengal is not a BJP ruled State but ruled by a ‘secular’ leader, the media remained mum or even gave clean chit to TMC goons. Their sins conveniently forgotten and their onslaught on democracy easily brushed off by the ‘India is under emergency’ brigade.
What does the figure of 25% uncontested ZP seats mean?? Well consider this: it is almost equivalent of TMC winning 70 Assembly seats or 10 Lok Sabha seats without any contest in WB. That is the level of grip under political terror. This is unprecedented. From any perspective.

Bengalis who chose Mamata and her promise of ‘poribartan’ must be feeling cheated by the horrifying news that a BJP leader’s six month pregnant sister-in-law was raped by TMC goons when the leader refused to withdraw his nominations. It seems Mamata is on some kind of mission to surpass the atrocities committed during the long rule of Communist Party and set a new record in terms of victims in her quest to unbridled power. If it is the case, she is taking a lead in this despicable race where her constituents are nothing but cannon-fodder. The dictatorial style of her functioning has made West Bengal a living hell for Hindus already but the constant validation by other ‘secular’ leaders of the country (Arvind Kejriwal, Lalu Prasad Yadav, Mulayam Singh, Rahul Gandhi etc.) of her deeds made her even more averse to any kind of opposition. The Panchayat elections are demonstrative of this fact. Mamata and TMC would not tolerate opposition in West Bengal and would resort to the most despicable kinds of violence to cling on to power.

It seems West Bengal is only safe for illegal Bangladeshis (for whom she has shown special compassion) and TMC goons, most of whom are themselves illegal Bangladeshis. Mamata’s desperation to stay in power is understandable given her non-existent stature outside Bengal. The completely baffling aspect of this whole fiasco is the way BJP is handling it. BJP and RSS workers are getting killed in Kerala, Bengal and Karnataka and despite being in power in the centre and in 22 states; BJP has been ridiculously ineffective in ensuring protection to its own cadre. Mamata is proving to be an unstoppable tyrant and any political compulsions that BJP might have in acting against her tyranny is just not worth it in the face of her continued onslaught on democracy and opposition. If BJP fails to realize the importance of ‘Shathe shathyam Samacharet’ (Evil must be countered by any means necessary), it can forget gaining a foothold in West Bengal.
