The National Students Union of India has not only killed the very essence of student politics, but has also ruined it. Any students’ organization is expected to take to the streets whenever the genuine demands of students studying in campuses are not met with. But if we go down memory lane and examine the biggest “educational scandals” that have taken place during the Congresses regime we find that NSUI leaders have found themselves very comfortable in the air-conditioned rooms of 5 Raisina Road. This is not just a disgrace to the student movements across the country but also raises a question about what kind of leadership their parent party the Congress is developing.
I have tried to elaborate on some of the most important educational scandals that have happened during the Congress regime, wherein NSUI chose to keep silent so as not to damage the credibility of its political masters.
1.) CBSE 2014 Physics Question paper leak:
CBSE in March 2014 was forced to reconduct the examination in the state of Manipur as the examination paper was leaked. The incumbent government was that of the Congress and my friends from the NSUI chose to keep their mouths completely shut. No one spoke a word against the problems that the students of Manipur had to face.
2.) All India CA Exam paper leak:
Not even a single member of the NSUI protested when the CA exam paper got leaked in Mumbai in the year 2013, for which 1.3 lakh students had appeared. This led to a lot of chaos within the student community. However, the other organization ABVP came to the rescue and raised their voice against the government, which resulted in the cancellation and the rescheduling of the examination.
3.) 2012 AIIMS paper leak:
The question paper for the All India Institute of Medical Sciences entrance test was leaked in the year 2012. This was the right time for the self-proclaimed largest “democratic students organization” NSUI to hold protests in favor of the students but they chose the more comfortable road so as not to confront their masters in power.
4.) 2011 AIEEE entrance paper leak:
Question papers were leaked in Uttar Pradesh. Around 12 lakh students appeared in more than 1600 centers and in 80 cities. But NSUI choose to zip their lips keep instead of protesting against the same.
These are some of the many educational scandals about which the NSUI keep quiet.
The list doesn’t end here. NSUI has several other feathers on its cap.
5.) The Mysore Sex Scandal:
With a lot of courage, some members of the NSUI belonging to the Mysore unit spoke about how they were forced to get money and women for their seniors who were posted as observers in the city. The three leaders named Charles, Satish and Anbu were pinpointed by then the Mysore city NSUI vice-president B Praveen. Praveen told the media that he was shocked when he was asked for a sum of rupees 5 lakh and women for their pleasure.
6.) NSUI President Dances Naked:
In the month of May 2013, the Mumbai president of the NSUI was caught having a sex party where he was seen dancing naked. This is not just a question of his integrity but also a big blot on the training that the Congress gives. I think he had a lot to learn from one of the senior leaders of Congress, a lawyer, whose deeds in his chamber went viral all over the internet.
7.) Theft by NSUI Activists:
The Mangalore secretary of the NSUI, along with four others was captured by the Udupi District Police for purportedly attempting to smuggle bronze idols of Jain Tirthankara close Kotalingeshwara Temple in Kundapura.
8.) Terror links:
District Secretary of NSUI Bihar Dhanu Raja, was arrested By NIA in December 2017 at Gopalganj on grounds of being a Lashkar Agent. This particular case doesn’t make us question the working of the organization but also its roots.
Conclusion:
This article is not to bash the NSUI left and right. It is a harbinger of truth, to make them realize that everything shouldn’t merely be opposed for the sake of it. Student organizations should rise above their political interests and the benefit of their political masters, and work towards developing a more inclusive India.
