Beyond the rhetorics: The Far reaching consequences of Sushma Swaraj’s UNGA Speech

In the wake of the Uri Attacks, after PM Narendra Modi showed his diplomatic restraint, many INDIANS, including his die hard followers, had given up all hope that anything would be done against the perpetrators, i.e. the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, for the same. But, if we know our Prime Minister Narendra Damodar Das Modi even a bit, he is not well known for nothing!

Unlike many diehard devotees (Bhakts in common lingo), who are constantly pestering for war and surgical strikes, Narendra Modi perhaps knows the Chanakya Neeti better. Which is why he unleashed one of his first weapons, that of the speech of Sushma Swaraj at the United Nations General Assembly Debate(UNGA), 2016.

For beginners, Sushma Swaraj is the same super heroine, who is delivering on her job of the Minister of External and Overseas Affairs rather well. The moment she began her speech in UNGA, we knew we were in for some really awesome stuff, for she began her speech in HINDI, a well crafted move, given the audience she wished to communicate to. Anyway, please don’t expect the Madrasa bred douchebags hailing from Pakistan to be experts on English, to begin with!

The 3rd and the final day brought Sushma Swaraj to the forefront, as the nation awaited her speech with baited breath. Only a few days ago, the PM of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif made a mountain of a mole hill that was his speech, glorifying terrorism and the slain Hizbul Mujahideen commander, Burhan Wani. Given how enraged the entire INDIA was on Uri and later this incongruous speech, everyone was eagerly waiting as to what response would Sushma ji give to both Pakistan and Nawaz Sharif, and she nailed it hands down!

Acknowledging the chair in her inaugural words, Sushma Swaraj began rather slowly, focusing on enlightening the audience with the goodwill executed in INDIA, from Digital India program, to Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, to name a few. Not exactly a good head start, right? But even on this, she was applauded by the entire assembly.

However, when she switched on to PAKISTAN, it was as if the logical and crisp feminine avatar of Sunny Deol had come up on the dais. To quote her:-

“Mr. President,

Let me now turn to a subject of the most critical importance, one which deeply concerns every member of this Assembly. This month, we marked the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on this city. Tragically, less than 15 days ago, another attempt at killing innocents was made through an act of terror on this same city. We, who have suffered in Uri recently, understand the pain inflicted by the same forces.

………………………..However, despite the blood and tears of the innocent victims, attacks this alone in Kabul.,…………Pathankot and Uri, as well as daily barbaric tragedies in Syria and Iraq, remind us that these malevolent forces are yet to be defeated.

Continuing in full form, Sushma Swaraj defined terrorism in the true style of ‘calling a spade a spade’.

To quote her, ‘Terrorism is one of the biggest violation of human rights’, a cue to a loud round of applause. Compare that, with the almost half empty chairs in the entire UN General Assembly, when Nawaz Sharif went on with his nit witty rants.

In an attack on the terror factories, Sushma Swaraj also questioned on how the agenda of terrorism was being nurtured, when according to her, ‘they had no banks, technology or support……? Who funds them? Who gives them arms and ammunition?’

Acknowledging the stance of Afghanistan on the same, Sushma Swaraj also said that the same issues were raised by our neighbor a few days ago. That must have burned Pakistan a lot, didn’t it?

With that, she also reminded on the sure shot remedy of terrorism, which is hell bent on bringing back the dark days of imperialism again.

She said, ‘If we need to destroy terrorism from the roots, we need to reconcile, forgetting our differences, and with sheer determination, we have to fight against it. We need to break old traditions, we have to relinquish our penchants, we have to keep aside our likes and dislikes, and fight terrorism with renewed vigor.’

Also, indirectly Sushma Swaraj admitted what pulls INDIA or any sane nation from giving terror backers like PAKISTAN a taste of their own medicine. To quote her, ‘This is not an uphill task, Mr. President, we only lack the willpower.’ True that, Sushma Ji. If only INDIA stands united, even Modi ji will be inspired to say, ‘Aakraman!’ (Attack!) She also said, that ‘IF WE DON’T DO IT NOW, THE COMING GENERATIONS WON’T FORGIVE US!’ Any doubts now?

If that was enough, she did not name PAKISTAN, but reminded the stooges of this burden of a nation,  that those who don’t want to join the war against terror, should be completely isolated.

In Sushma Swaraj’s own words, ‘such people speak terrorism, grow terrorism, even sell terrorism. It is their hobby to nurture terrorism………..Such people should have no place in the world community (Vishva Samudaya)’, again cue to a loud round of applause from the whole hall.

Then, she went ultimately all out against the rants of Nawaz Sharif, exposing him brutally at the General Assembly, while speaking up on the sensitive issue of Balochistan. To quote her, ‘Just look at your side, what is happening in Balochistan? What are you doing there? ………I can say that whatever is happening today in Balochistan, is the crossing of all limits of inhumanity and torture!’

In one of her anecdotes, she reminded the world of the hypocrite that is Pakistan. Quoting the very famous dialogue from Yash Chopra’s 1965 classic, Waqt, she said, ‘Jinke khud ke ghar sheeshe ke hon, who doosron par patthar nahin phenka karte!’ (Those who have their own houses made of glass, shouldn’t pelt stones on others’)

Also, she exposed the stance of PAKISTAN, questioning as to what conditions did INDIA impose when they offered their goodwill statues. To quote her, ‘We extended our friendship, but what we got in 2 years? Uri? Pathankot? ……We wish to ask, are we imposing conditions, or are you showing your true intentions…?’ Peace doves, intellectual terrorists, ‘Aman Ki Asha’ experts, what do you have to say now?

However, while ending her speech at UNGA, Sushma Swaraj played a masterstroke, that very few people could understand.

If anyone can exercise their grey matter, they will understand that in 1996, INDIA had initiated for CCIT (Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism), which called for concerted action on the issue of terrorism, in the wake of rising atrocities of Taliban and Al Qaeda at that time. However, this was unceremoniously dismissed without a move . With this, Sushma Swaraj ji has played  a move that could turn out, in the long run, to be an effective weapon against terror nurseries like PAKISTAN, inflicting the same damages on them as it would on nations like Libya, South Africa, when they were notorious for their atrocities. Anyone still thinks now that INDIA would do nothing after Uri? Think again, then!

As an ultimate reminder, Sushma Swaraj also said, ‘If they think that by saying such inciting speeches and committing such atrocities, they can snatch some area of our country, they’re wrong. Kashmir was ours, and will forever be!” Although she didn’t do that, yet one would seriously pine for that famous dialogue, ‘Doodh mangoge to kheer denge, Kashmir mangoge to ………….’

To cut the long story short, Sushma Swaraj delivered the perfect statesman’s speech, with not much of divulgence, but a no nonsense approach of isolating Pakistan from the global stage. This speech has far reaching consequence.

The only point where she could have performed much better was to reveal Pakistan as a nuclear state, the solid reason for which none of the big superpowers want to meddle in our issue.

Also, some devotees of both the government and the minister would be disappointed for not donning the cloak of Sardar or Faisal Khan at the podium. But that’s UN General Assembly, not LOC or Wasseypur, understood?

We strongly hope that the government actuates the words into strong, befitting actions, a signal of which Narendra Modi has already given on his stance on INDUS WATER TREATY, when he said, ‘Blood and Water cannot go together’
