Mika Singh’s Pakistan Praise Misses the Bigger Reality

Romance Confuses Hospitality With Historical Amnesia

Mika Singh’s Pakistan Praise Misses the Bigger Reality
Share on FacebookShare on X

Mika Singh has once again managed to turn a podcast interview into a lesson in how easily celebrity sentiment can blur into political naivety. The singer’s declaration that he “loves Pakistan” because Pakistani Muslims help maintain gurdwaras is not a profound statement of communal harmony; it is a superficial, selective reading of a country whose state policies, security establishment, and treatment of minorities deserve far more scrutiny than a few acts of goodwill at Sikh shrines.

Mika Singh’s argument rests on an emotional anecdote: during his 2019 visit, he saw local Muslims serving at gurdwaras and helping with cleaning. That is genuinely commendable, and no reasonable person should deny the dignity of individuals who respect another faith’s sacred spaces. But it is intellectually lazy to leap from the conduct of individual volunteers to a sweeping verdict that Pakistan itself is benign, misunderstood, or unfairly maligned.

The singer asked why Indians dislike Pakistani Muslims while accepting Muslims from Dubai. The comparison is careless. Dubai is not Pakistan; it is a commercial hub where millions of Indians live and work, and where bilateral relations are shaped by trade, tourism, and employment rather than by a decades-long history of war, terrorism, and hostile state policy. To treat the two as interchangeable is not moral clarity. It is confusion dressed up as tolerance.

Mika Singh is right that Nankana Sahib and Panja Sahib hold immense spiritual importance for Sikhs. Pakistan is home to major Sikh pilgrimage sites, and the preservation of these places matters deeply to millions of believers. But reverence for sacred geography cannot become an excuse to ignore the wider reality in which those sites exist.

It is one thing to praise a caretaker who sweeps a gurdwara floor. It is quite another to suggest that such service proves a state’s broader record on religious freedom, minority protection, or pluralism. Mika Singh’s argument mistakes a photograph of harmony for the full landscape. Individual kindness is real, but it does not erase institutional realities.

The singer’s remarks also flatten the distinction between ordinary Pakistani citizens and the Pakistani state. Indians can reject prejudice against Pakistani Muslims while still holding Pakistan’s military and political establishment accountable for cross-border terrorism, proxy conflicts, and the persistent use of hostility toward India as a political instrument. Conflating the two allows Mika Singh to accuse critics of bigotry while avoiding the harder question of state responsibility.

There is something particularly galling about a wealthy, internationally mobile celebrity presenting his personal hospitality as the definitive measure of a nation. Mika Singh visited Pakistan as a welcomed guest, performed before admiring audiences, and was received with the warmth that celebrities often receive anywhere in the world. That experience may have been real, but it is not a substitute for political judgment.

Mika Singh’s framing suggests that anyone who raises concerns about Pakistan is somehow irrational or prejudiced. That is an insult to victims of terrorism, to families affected by cross-border violence, and to minorities who continue to face insecurity in Pakistan. Compassion for individuals should never require silence about the structures that endanger them.

The singer also defended Indian artistes performing in Pakistan, arguing that private professional visits should not be treated as political acts. There is a defensible case for cultural exchange in principle. But Mika Singh presents it as though criticism of such visits is inherently irrational, ignoring the reality that cultural engagement can be used for propaganda, legitimacy-building, or political messaging in a hostile bilateral environment.

Mika Singh’s strongest emotional claim concerns Guru Nanak Dev and the Sikh shrines in Pakistan. It is understandable that a Sikh artist feels a spiritual pull toward Nankana Sahib and Panja Sahib. Faith is personal, and pilgrimage is a legitimate reason to feel connected to a place.

Yet it is troubling when religious sentiment is used to shut down political scrutiny. A gurdwara being maintained well does not answer questions about blasphemy laws, forced conversions, discrimination, sectarian violence, or the security of minorities. Mika Singh does not need to become a foreign-policy expert, but he should recognise that faith-based goodwill cannot be deployed as a blanket certificate of national virtue.

His statement that Pakistani Muslims are good because they maintain gurdwaras also risks reducing an entire community to a convenient symbol for his argument. Pakistani Muslims, like any people, should be judged as individuals—not as props in a celebrity’s attempt to appear broad-minded. Ironically, Mika Singh’s sweeping praise is almost as simplistic as the prejudice he claims to oppose.

The decent position is neither hatred toward Pakistani citizens nor sentimental denial of Pakistan’s state conduct. It is to distinguish people from policy, individuals from institutions, and hospitality from accountability. Mika Singh seems unwilling—or unable—to make those distinctions.

Mika Singh may love Pakistan for personal and spiritual reasons, and he is entitled to that feeling. But when he presents that affection as a corrective to Indian public opinion, he owes his audience more than a story about cleaning gurdwaras. He owes them honesty about the full reality of the country he is defending.

Until then, Mika Singh’s comments will read less like courage and more like the comfortable illusions of a celebrity who has mistaken a warm reception for a reliable measure of a nation’s character.
