The Auroville controversy surrounding Annapurna Farm has entered a fresh phase after residents challenged a final relocation communication issued by the Auroville Foundation, with competing claims emerging over the timeline, alternative arrangements and the future use of the disputed land. While supporters of the farm have described the development as a sudden eviction, the Foundation’s position is that the decision followed more than a year of discussions and multiple attempts to find an alternative arrangement.
At the centre of the dispute is approximately 100 acres earmarked for a sustainability campus being developed in collaboration with IIT Madras. The project followed a Memorandum of Understanding signed in July 2025 between the Auroville Foundation and IIT Madras, which subsequently received approval from the Ministry of Education. A 33-year lease for the land was executed in December 2025.
The controversy gained momentum after a September 5, 2026 communication gave Annapurna residents 10 days to voluntarily relocate. Critics viewed the short deadline as evidence of an abrupt eviction. The Foundation, however, maintains that the communication represented the final stage of a much longer process. According to an Auroville Township Development Council member quoted in the report, meetings and negotiations had continued throughout 2025 and 2026, while alternative accommodation and farming locations were offered to the residents.
The Annapurna management has reportedly examined five alternative sites in the Green Belt, ranging from 3.5 to 11 acres, but concluded that none could sustain its operations. The farm says it requires at least 50 acres of contiguous land to remain commercially and agriculturally viable. That requirement has become one of the central points of disagreement, with the Foundation arguing that such a large contiguous tract may not be available within the township’s existing land resources.
The legal history also adds an important dimension to the debate. In April 2026, the Madras High Court dismissed a writ petition filed by Madhuri Tirtharam Kadam, a resident associated with Annapurna Farm. The court held that the land belonged to the Auroville Foundation and described the farm’s occupation as permissive, meaning that occupation did not confer ownership or an independent legal title over the property. The judgment also recognised the Governing Board’s authority to administer and utilise Foundation property.
That ruling has become central to the Foundation’s position. However, the dispute has not ended with the earlier judgment. On September 15, Annapurna Farm filed a civil suit before the Vanur District Munsif Court seeking a permanent injunction against dispossession. The latest legal challenge therefore shifts the immediate question from the broader authority of the Foundation to the circumstances and manner in which relocation is being pursued.
The proposed IIT Madras project has further complicated the public debate. Supporters of the campus argue that its sustainability focus is consistent with the ecological and experimental ethos historically associated with Auroville. The proposed facility reportedly includes research activities and a zero-emission electric truck test track, making the project substantially different from conventional commercial development.
At the same time, the parliamentary record provides another layer to the controversy. The Department-Related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports welcomed the IIT Madras agreement in its December 2025 report while also noting that the project would affect Annapurna. The committee recommended that alternative sites nearby be identified and that the farm should not be disturbed. The report therefore acknowledged both the sustainability project and the importance of food sustainability within Auroville.
The disagreement ultimately revolves around competing interpretations of land use. For Annapurna’s supporters, the farm represents decades of agricultural work and an important component of the township’s food-sustainability model. For the Foundation, the land is an institutional asset that can be reassigned when a legally approved project is considered beneficial to the wider community. The Foundation also points to the previous court ruling concerning permissive occupation.
The dispute has consequently become much larger than a disagreement over a 10-day notice. It raises questions about institutional authority, environmental priorities, agricultural continuity and the limits of long-term occupation. As the legal proceedings continue, Auroville is being asked to reconcile its commitment to sustainable living with competing demands for land devoted to education and research.
The coming legal proceedings could therefore determine more than the immediate future of Annapurna Farm. They may also establish how existing agricultural communities and future development projects coexist within Auroville, particularly when long-standing practices encounter formally approved institutional plans.
