US President Donald Trump has once again claimed that the war with Iran could end at his discretion, asserting in an Axios interview that there is “practically nothing left to target” and that the conflict will conclude “any time I want it to end.” Trump suggested that his military objectives have largely been achieved, signalling confidence even as hostilities continue across the region.
Israel Promises Uninterrupted Campaign
Earlier on Wednesday, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz emphasised that joint US-Israel operations would persist “as long as necessary” to achieve all objectives. Katz told AFP that strikes in Tehran and across Iran would continue “day after day, target after target” to encourage citizens to rise up and remove the Khamenei-led regime. He added that the ultimate outcome depends on Iran’s own people.
Despite Trump’s assertions of imminent success, the military campaign shows no signs of slowing. Analysts note that the US President faces domestic criticism and growing concern over global economic disruption caused by the conflict. Speculation is mounting that Trump’s statements may be motivated by political considerations, with November midterm elections approaching and his party at risk of setbacks.
Iran Signals Defiance and Retaliation
Iran has remained defiant. Ali Fadavi, advisor to the commander-in-chief of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, warned state television that the United States and Israel should prepare for “a long-term war of attrition that will destroy the entire American economy and the world economy, and will erode all military capabilities to the point of destruction.” On Wednesday, Iranian forces reported strikes on a Liberia-flagged vessel and a Thai bulk carrier in the Strait of Hormuz, the strategic chokepoint for global oil shipments.
Trump Issues Stark Warning to Tehran
Trump has repeatedly highlighted Iran’s weakened military capacity, claiming the country has no functioning navy, air force, or communications system. He warned Iran not to “try anything cute,” stating that any hostile action could result in “the end of that country.” The President’s warnings follow concerns over mines reported in the Strait of Hormuz, with Trump signalling that the US could respond with military force “at a level never seen before” if Iran interferes with critical shipping routes.
Mixed Messages Add Uncertainty
Trump’s comments follow similar statements on Monday, suggesting the war could end “soon.” While the President emphasises a possible rapid conclusion, Israeli officials indicate a prolonged campaign, and Iranian authorities remain prepared to fight back. The war’s trajectory is uncertain, leaving the Middle East on edge and global markets watching closely as the situation unfolds.
