The Last Stand at Battle of Saragarhi, Remembering the 21 Heroes of 36th Sikhs Regiment

On September 12, 1897, on a rugged frontier between India and Afghanistan, a small outpost named Saragarhi became the stage for one of the greatest last stands in military history. Just 21 Sikh soldiers of the 36th Sikhs regiment, led by Havildar Ishar Singh, chose death over surrender as they held their ground against a massive force of nearly 8,000 – 15,000 tribal invaders. They knew they had no chance of survival, yet they fought for seven relentless hours, killing hundreds of attackers before falling one by one. That courage, that defiance, and that spirit of sacrifice are what the world remembers today as Saragarhi Day, a day etched in the annals of global military history as a symbol of supreme valor and loyalty.

The Strategic Importance of Saragarhi

Saragarhi was not just a small post in the North-West Frontier Province (now in Pakistan). It was the critical communication link between two larger forts—Fort Lockhart and Fort Gulistan constructed by Maharaja Ranjit Singh and later renamed by the British. Through the heliograph, a system using mirrors and sunlight, messages were transmitted across the rugged mountains. Normally manned by 40 soldiers, Saragarhi on September 12, 1897, was held by only 21 men of the 36th Sikhs and a civilian helper named Daad.

The post might have seemed insignificant, but in reality, it was a lifeline. Capturing Saragarhi meant cutting off Fort Lockhart from Fort Gulistan, isolating British and Sikh troops stationed there. That was precisely the plan of the Afridi and Orakzai tribes who launched a massive offensive to overrun the forts.

The Morning of September 12: Enemy at the Gates

At around 9 a.m., the sentry at Saragarhi spotted a dust cloud rising in the distance. Within minutes, it became clear it was an army of thousands marching towards them. Estimates later put the number between 8,000 and 15,000 tribal fighters. The objective was simple: overwhelm Saragarhi, cut communication, and encircle the forts.

Sepoy Gurmukh Singh, just 23 years old, was operating the heliograph. He quickly sent out a Morse code message to Fort Lockhart: “Enemy approaching the main gate… need reinforcement.” The reply came, but it offered no comfort: “Unable to breakthrough, hold position.”

Havildar Ishar Singh, the commander, gathered his men and conveyed the situation. Outnumbered nearly 400 to 1, with no hope of reinforcements, they had a choice: surrender or fight. Without hesitation, they chose to fight.

Seven Hours of Unmatched Bravery

The Sikh soldiers held their ground for seven hours, despite limited ammunition of around 400 rounds per man. Havildar Ishar Singh led from the front, directing fire and rallying his men. The tribes launched repeated assaults, but the defenders repulsed wave after wave, killing over 200 and wounding around 600.

Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Sikhs fought with astonishing coordination. Naik Lal Singh, the oldest at 47, continued firing even after being badly injured and bedridden. Gurmukh Singh, the signalman, not only sent messages but also managed binoculars and recorded incoming signals a task usually requiring three men. Eventually, he too picked up his rifle to fight.

As one soldier after another fell, Gurmukh sent a final message: “Permission to join the battle, Sir.” The reply granting permission came, and he fought until his last breath. His death marked the end of the resistance but by then, Saragarhi had become immortal.

The Men Behind the Legend

The hero of Saragarhi, Havildar Ishar Singh, was a maverick soldier. Born near Jagraon, Punjab, he had served in many campaigns with the Punjab Frontier Force. Known for his independent streak and refusal to blindly follow orders, he was nevertheless adored by his men. He was in his 40s, childless but deeply devoted to his comrades.

British historian Maj Gen James Lunt once described him: “In camp, a nuisance. In the field, magnificent.” That magnificence was on full display at Saragarhi.

The youngest, Naik Gurmukh Singh, just 23, became the lifeline of the fort, transmitting messages until the very end. Naik Lal Singh, despite grievous injuries, kept shooting from his bed until he died. And then there was Daad, the non-combatant sweeper from Nowshera, who fought like a soldier, killing five attackers before being stabbed to death. Though denied honors at the time, history now remembers him as the 22nd martyr of Saragarhi.

Recognition, Legacy, and Global Salute

The Battle of Saragarhi stunned the world. Queen Victoria broke tradition by awarding the Indian Order of Merit posthumously to all 21 soldiers (India’s highest gallantry award at the time, equivalent to the Victoria Cross). Families received land grants and financial compensation, though many, including Ishar Singh’s family, later fell into hardship.

In Britain, the Sikh sacrifice was deeply honored. Burnt bricks from Saragarhi were used to build a memorial obelisk, and gurdwaras were commissioned in Amritsar and Ferozepur. Even the Pakistani Khyber Scouts, decades later, continued to salute the Saragarhi memorial.

In 2017, the Punjab government declared September 12 as a state holiday to commemorate Saragarhi Day. Bollywood too brought the story to the big screen, with Akshay Kumar’s Kesari offering a popular retelling of the battle.

Saragarhi Day Today: A Legacy of Courage

Saragarhi Day is not just about remembering 21 martyrs; it is about honoring the spirit of never giving up, even against impossible odds. The story has become part of military education worldwide, often compared to the Battle of Thermopylae where 300 Spartans fought to the last man.

Every year, Sikhs across the globe, from Punjab to the UK, mark September 12 with ceremonies and tributes. The Saragarhi Foundation in Britain has also worked tirelessly to spread awareness about the sacrifice.

This tale of 21 soldiers has become larger than life a reminder that true courage is not about numbers but about the will to stand firm for honor, duty, and country.

The Immortals of Saragarhi

The 21 soldiers of Saragarhi were not fighting for survival; they were fighting for honor, for duty, and for the spirit of their regiment. They knew they would die, yet they chose to make their last stand one of defiance and sacrifice. Their bravery delayed the enemy, saved the forts, and created a legacy that has endured for 127 years.

As the world remembers Saragarhi Day every September 12, the story of these men continues to inspire soldiers and civilians alike. In their death, they achieved immortality. The immortal 21 will forever remain etched in history as the embodiment of courage against all odds.
