When people elect leaders, they expect compassion, accountability, and quick response in times of crisis. But in Punjab, while families wade through waist-deep floodwaters, farmlands are submerged, and farmers are gripped with fear over how they will repay mounting debts, their ministers were busy chatting about cruise trips in Sweden and Goa. A viral video of three AAP ministers casually discussing luxury holidays while inspecting flood-hit Tarn Taran district has not just hurt sentiments but exposed the sheer insensitivity of those in power. This single episode sums up the arrogance, negligence, and misplaced priorities of Punjab’s ruling class.
Ministers on “Relief Duty,” But Talking Cruises
The video in question, livestreamed from Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar’s Facebook account, showed Bhullar along with Harbhajan Singh (Buildings & Roads Minister) and Barinder Kumar Goyal (Water Resources Minister) inspecting the flood-affected areas. The trio, dressed in life jackets on a boat, were supposed to be assessing the damage. Instead, they were overheard discussing cruise vacations in Sweden and Goa.
Bhullar proudly explained how Sweden cruises offer “everything on the ship itself, hotel and all,” while Goyal asked curiously about the trip. Bhullar compared it to Goa cruises. The irony? They were tasked with leading flood relief in the border districts yet their minds were sailing in luxury waters thousands of miles away.
The video, once viral, caused a storm. Though the same account later posted another clip of the ministers appealing to citizens to follow government instructions and move to safer places, the damage was done. Punjab’s flood victims had already seen the truth: their ministers were more engaged in reliving foreign jaunts than sharing the pain of the people.
Opposition Tears Into AAP Ministers
Both the BJP and Congress wasted no time in tearing into the AAP government. Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa blasted the ministers on X (formerly Twitter):
“Flood-hit families in Punjab beg for a glass of drinking water, but AAP Punjab Ministers found time to relive their ‘golden memories’ of luxury cruises in Sweden & Goa. What a relief tour!”
BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh went a step further “Punjab has drowned, fields have been destroyed, houses have been devastated, families are on the streets. But even in these conditions, the ministers are talking about Sweden-Goa cruises instead of sitting on a boat and sharing the pain of the flood victims!”
Chugh also alleged that CM Bhagwant Mann’s government has failed its people. He questioned whether the mandate was given to “relive cruise tales during disasters” or to “reduce the troubles of the people.” His sharp words “the leaders who talk about luxury in times of disaster are actually the biggest culprits of Punjab’s destruction” echoed the public mood.
Farmers Drowning, Leaders Daydreaming
The floods in Punjab have wreaked havoc across eight districts, destroying crops, flooding homes, and pushing families into uncertainty. Farmers now stare at fields submerged in water, calculating not profits but losses and worrying about repaying debts that may now drag them into financial ruin.
Yet, instead of addressing these urgent issues compensation, rehabilitation, crop damage relief the ministers tasked with leading flood efforts were busy daydreaming about foreign trips. Their tone-deaf conversation, livestreamed accidentally, has become a metaphor for a government completely detached from the struggles of its people.
This is not just about one careless chat. It reflects the mindset of a party that once rode on promises of clean politics and governance focused on the common man but now appears self-indulgent and arrogant. The AAP leadership in Delhi has already been humbled, with its chief minister candidate and party chief Aravind Kejriwal losing credibility and legal troubles clouding the party’s image. Punjab seems next in line to give its verdict.
AAP’s Waning Credibility in Punjab
This incident isn’t an isolated embarrassment it is part of a larger erosion of trust. The AAP government came to power promising change, transparency, and governance rooted in the people’s welfare. But in moments of crisis like these, when empathy and leadership matter most, the mask slips.
People are watching closely. The viral video has already become symbolic: in one minute, it showcased the misplaced priorities of an entire party. AAP, once seen as a fresh alternative, is now seen by many as indifferent and arrogant. If the Delhi experience is anything to go by where the party has lost both public goodwill and electoral ground Punjab may soon follow.
People Deserve Leaders, Not Tourists
This shameful episode of Punjab ministers discussing luxury cruises during flood inspections has enraged a state already battling devastation. Leaders are elected to serve, not to daydream about vacations while their people drown. Citizens expect their grievances to be heard, their losses addressed, and their dignity respected not mocked with tales of overseas leisure.
At a time when farmers worry about how to repay loans and families in search for safe drinking water, these ministers revealed their true concerns: not Punjab, but their travel plans. This is a betrayal of trust, a slap on the face of democracy, and a reminder that political power without responsibility quickly degenerates into arrogance.
It is only a matter of time before Punjab’s voters, like Delhi’s, deliver their judgment. And when they do, the message will be clear: those who abandon the people in their darkest hours will find no space in the light of public trust.
