In an increasingly volatile and hostile global order, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is once again proving why he stands tall among world leaders. He has been calm, strategic and rooted firmly in national interest, despite repeated threats by US President Donald Trump on tariffs. The latest episode in India’s foreign policy playbook highlights Modi’s ability to shield Indian interests without flinching or compromising its interests.
In late July, the US administration began warning about potential economic repercussions for countries that continued purchasing discounted Russian oil. This was a veiled threat aimed clearly at India. However, when India refused to compromise its energy security and strategic autonomy, Trump followed through with an imposition of tariffs on certain Indian goods.
Seemingly, this wasn’t just about trade. It was a calculated attempt by the US to corner India economically and politically and pushing New Delhi to choose between affordable energy from Russia and “cooperation” with the West.
Any other government might have scrambled. But not Modi’s didn’t.
India’s response has been articulated clearly and firmly through the Ministry of External Affairs. The MEA made it evident that the country would not allow foreign leaders to dictate its economic choices. Its statement called out the unilateral nature of the tariffs while reaffirming that India’s global partnerships are based on mutual respect, not coercion. It was a textbook example of strategic restraint, measured, firm, deeply patriotic and protecting Indian interests.
Opposition’s Dubious Role
What was the Congress doing? Mocking the government and reveling in it. The senior leadership of the grand old party mocked India’s stand against Washington’s bullying. In his desperation to score political points, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi repeatedly began spinning his own confused and contradictory narrative.
July: “Just wait, Modi will bend and accept Trump’s trade terms.”
August 1st: “See? Trump imposed tariffs because Modi didn’t accept the deal.”
August 2nd: “Modi stopped Russian oil under Trump’s pressure.”
August 4th: “Tariffs were imposed because Modi didn’t stop Russian oil!”
So what does the Congress’ scion want? Did Modi surrender or defy? Congress can’t seem to make up its mind. However, the facts speak for themselves: PM Modi didn’t cave to Trump, and that’s the truth. He didn’t allow Russian oil imports to be halted. And Modi’s government didn’t beg for tariff relief from the US. He simply stood his ground and let the US make its moves. All this while India responded through official channels with dignity and resolve.
Congress’s repeated attempts to twist the narrative only exposed how out of touch it is with the modern Indian electorate and international diplomacy. Voters can see through these performative rants which aim to show the Modi government in bad light. They see a Prime Minister who doesn’t get provoked by pressure from Washington or mocked into reaction by domestic opponents.
All this while, PM Modi’s reliance was seen on the strength of official channels to deliver mature, well-calibrated responses, whether it’s a tariff threat or a geopolitical jab.
This is what makes PM Modi stand apart. While other world leaders and past Indian regimes, including Congress-led ones, would rush to Washington seeking approval or compromise, PM Modi has crafted a foreign policy that puts India first. He isn’t interested in being a “junior partner” to the West and is building a confident, self-reliant Bharat that speaks from a position of strength.
It sems that the Congress, still stuck in the outdated framework of Western appeasement, simply can’t stomach that shift. Congress leadership’s mocking of India’s strong response and their habit of taking potshots at India’s global posture all come from a place of insecurity and political opportunism.
Over the past 11 years India has changed completely. It rewards strength and not submission. And its diplomacy is driven by national interest, not colonial-era servility of the Congress. And that’s why PM Modi continues to command not just respect at home, but growing recognition abroad, as a leader who doesn’t flinch and doesn’t compromise India’s core interests despite Trump’s relentless pressure tactics.
