char dham yatra suspended due to bad weather: CM Pushkar Singh Dhami

Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced on Thursday, July 3, 2025, that the state government has decided to temporarily suspend the Char Dham Yatra due to the deteriorating weather conditions in the region. The decision was made to ensure the safety of the pilgrims, as heavy rainfall and adverse weather could lead to hazardous conditions in the mountainous terrain.

“Considering the current weather situation, the Char Dham Yatra has been temporarily suspended. The journey will resume only when the weather conditions improve and when it is safe for the pilgrims. The safety of all the devotees is our top priority,” said CM Dhami in a statement issued to the media.

Enhanced Preparedness for Contingencies

Authorities are taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of the pilgrims. District officials, disaster management teams, and personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are on high alert and fully prepared for any unforeseen circumstances. The government has assured that once the weather conditions improve and the roads are deemed safe, the Char Dham Yatra will resume. The state administration is working diligently to ensure that the pilgrimage can continue smoothly without compromising the safety of the pilgrims.

Kedarnath Yatra Suspended Due to Landslide Blockage

The Char Dham Yatra includes visits to four sacred shrines- Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri each of which holds immense religious significance in Hinduism. However, on the same day, Rudraprayag Police announced that the Kedarnath Yatra had also been temporarily halted due to a landslide in the Sonprayag region. The landslide, which occurred in the Munkatia Sliding Zone, caused debris and rocks to block the main route to Kedarnath.

The authorities are currently working on clearing the debris and restoring the path. Police officials have confirmed that once the road is cleared and the situation is deemed safe, the Kedarnath Yatra will resume. Given the high altitude and difficult terrain, maintaining safety during the Yatra is a constant challenge for authorities.

Char Dham Yatra: A Sacred Pilgrimage for Millions

The Char Dham Yatra is one of the most revered pilgrimages in Hinduism, attracting millions of devotees each year. The Yatra includes visits to four holy shrines- Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri located in the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand. Each of these shrines is dedicated to a different deity and holds deep spiritual significance for Hindus.

Kedarnath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is situated at an elevation of over 11,000 feet above sea level and is considered one of the twelve Jyotirlingas (sacred shrines of Lord Shiva).

Badrinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is one of the 108 Divya Desams (sacred shrines of Vishnu).

Gangotri Temple is dedicated to the goddess Ganga, where the holy river Ganges is believed to have descended from the heavens.

Yamunotri Temple is dedicated to the goddess Yamuna, the sister of Yama, the god of death.

The Char Dham Yatra is considered not only a physical journey but also a spiritual one, where pilgrims seek to attain salvation and peace by visiting these sacred sites. Over the years, the state government has worked tirelessly to improve the infrastructure around these holy places to accommodate the increasing number of devotees.

Record Pilgrim Numbers and Enhanced Safety Measures

This year, Kedarnath Temple has witnessed a record number of devotees, reflecting both the improved infrastructure and the growing spiritual interest in the region. In addition to better roadways, helicopter services have been expanded, and accommodation facilities at the pilgrimage sites have been upgraded.

In an effort to make the Yatra safer, especially in the high-altitude regions, local authorities have significantly strengthened safety and medical services. The government has ensured that adequate medical teams, rescue operations, and infrastructure are in place to handle the challenges posed by the harsh terrain and unpredictable weather conditions.

An Ancient Pilgrimage with Modern Facilities

Despite the recent challenges, such as the landslides and the helicopter crash, the state has continued its efforts to modernize the Char Dham Yatra experience. The government has introduced state-of-the-art infrastructure, including better roads, advanced weather forecasting systems, and enhanced telecommunications to ensure that pilgrims can travel with greater ease and safety.

Kedarnath, in particular, has been a focal point for these improvements. The temple opened its gates for this year’s pilgrimage on May 2, 2025. The journey to Kedarnath is particularly challenging due to its high-altitude location, but the state government has taken steps to ensure that safety is prioritized, with more frequent weather updates and improved evacuation protocols in place.

A Call for Patience and Caution

With the temporary suspension of the Char Dham Yatra, authorities are urging pilgrims to exercise patience and caution. They are advised to stay updated on the situation and follow all safety guidelines issued by local authorities. The state government remains committed to resuming the pilgrimage as soon as conditions allow, ensuring that every precaution is taken to safeguard the lives of the pilgrims.

As the Char Dham Yatra continues to be one of the most important spiritual journeys for millions of Hindus, the government’s focus remains on maintaining a balance between accessibility, spiritual fulfillment, and safety for all pilgrims. The goal is to provide a secure and enriching pilgrimage experience while preserving the sanctity and religious significance of these ancient shrines.
