As the political landscape heats up ahead of the Assembly elections in Bihar and West Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is making a high-profile visit to both states today, launching development projects worth over ₹12,000 crore aimed at transforming infrastructure, connectivity, and livelihoods.
From new railway lines and express trains to gas pipelines and digital hubs, the Prime Minister’s back-to-back events in Motihari (Bihar) and Durgapur (West Bengal) signal the government’s intent to leave a tangible development footprint in two politically crucial states.
Bihar: Big Ticket Projects With a Local Touch
In Motihari, PM Modi is set to unveil and lay the foundation stones for development works exceeding ₹7,200 crore. The event carries not just economic but political weight, with Bihar heading into Assembly polls early next year.
Standing before a large public gathering, the Prime Minister will flag off four Amrit Bharat Express trains that connect Patna, Motihari, Darbhanga, and Malda Town to major northern cities like Delhi and Lucknow, promising faster and more comfortable journeys for daily commuters and long-distance travellers alike.
In the rail sector, Bihar will see:
Inauguration of automatic signalling on the Samastipur–Bachhwara section
Doubling of Darbhanga–Thalwara and Samastipur–Rambhadrapur lines
Together, these upgrades come at a cost of ₹580 crore.
Looking ahead, PM Modi will also lay the foundation for:
A Vande Bharat maintenance facility at Patliputra
Doubling of the Darbhanga–Narkatiaganj line
These long-term rail infrastructure projects are valued at ₹4,080 crore.
In road development, the spotlight is on two strategic four-laning projects:
The Ara bypass
The Parariya–Mohania section of NH-319
At a combined cost of ₹820 crore, these roads aim to enhance connectivity along the Delhi–Kolkata Golden Quadrilateral, a key economic corridor.
For Bihar’s growing tech-savvy youth, there’s a clear nod to the digital economy. The PM will inaugurate:
A Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) facility in Darbhanga
An incubation centre in Patna to support start-ups and IT/ITES exporters
Rural communities will also benefit from new fisheries infrastructure under the PM Matsya Sampada Yojana, including hatcheries, fish feed mills, and aquaculture units, designed to bolster income and employment in agrarian pockets.
West Bengal: Powering Energy Projects
Later in the day, PM Modi will travel to Durgapur, West Bengal, where he will lay the foundation for and inaugurate energy and gas pipeline projects worth more than ₹5,000 crore.
A key highlight is the ₹1,950 crore City Gas Distribution (CGD) project by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) in Bankura and Purulia — districts that have long lagged behind in infrastructure and energy access. The project promises:
Piped Natural Gas (PNG) to households, shops, and industries
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) availability at retail outlets, promoting greener fuel usage
PM Modi will also dedicate two significant pipeline sections to the nation:
The Durgapur–Kolkata stretch (132 km) of the Durgapur–Haldia Natural Gas Pipeline
The Bokaro–Dhamra Pipeline, part of the larger Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga (PMUG) Project
