In a decisive move to safeguard the sanctity of Sanatan Dharma and crack down on religious imposters, the Uttarakhand government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, has launched ‘Operation Kaalnemi’, a campaign in entire state aimed at identifying and punishing those who exploit religious sentiments for personal gain under the guise of saints, gurus, or spiritual leaders.
Deception in the Garb of Devotion
The so-called ‘Devbhoomi’ has, in recent years, witnessed an alarming rise in incidents where self-proclaimed godmen, dressed as Hindu sadhus, have duped innocent devotees, particularly women under the pretext of spiritual healing, blessings, or rituals. These acts not only undermine the spiritual fabric of Sanatan Dharma but also disrupt communal harmony and dishonour the image of the faith.
Taking a bold stand, CM Dhami declared via ‘X’ post on July 10, 2025:
‘Instructions have been issued to launch ‘Operation Kaalnemi’ against imposters exploiting Sanatan Dharma to mislead and defraud people in Uttarakhand.’
He added that these imposters, much like the demon Kaalnemi from the Ramayana who disguised himself as a sage to deceive Hanuman, are modern-day threats to dharma and society, and their deception will meet the same fate.
No Religious Immunity, Only Accountability
CM Dhami made it clear that no one will be spared based on religious affiliation.
‘Whichever religion or sect the wrongdoer belongs to, strict action will be taken without exception,’ he affirmed.
Reports also indicate that some of these imposters have links to other religions but adopt Hindu identities to mislead people for ideological and financial motives. The state will now actively identify such individuals and take robust legal action.
Beyond Just a Crackdown
This campaign comes in the wake of the Dhami government’s broader efforts to protect the religious and cultural integrity of Uttarakhand. Earlier, the state freed over 6,500 acres of land from illegal encroachments, many of which were connected to unauthorized shrines and religious structures. Over 500 illegal mazars (shrines) are now also under review for possible demolition or legal scrutiny.
CM Dhami has reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining the demographic balance of the state, signaling that any attempt to alter the socio-religious makeup of Uttarakhand will be dealt with firmly.
Why the Name ‘Operation Kaalnemi’?
Drawing a powerful metaphor from the Ramayana, Kaalnemi was a demon sent by Ravana to delay Hanuman’s mission to fetch the life-saving Sanjeevani herb for Lakshman. Disguised as a saint, Kaalnemi tried to deceive Hanuman but was ultimately exposed and killed. The operation’s name sends a clear message: those masquerading as holy men to mislead and harm society will be unmasked and eliminated from the system.

‘Operation Kaalnemi’ is not just a law enforcement move; it’s a cultural and moral necessity. In an age where pseudo-spiritual conmen are diluting the sacred traditions of Sanatan Dharma, decisive action is the need of the hour. Uttarakhand, as the spiritual heartland of India, must lead by example, and it now is.
The real protectors of dharma must be vigilant, and the state must remain uncompromising. There’s no room for wolves in saffron robes. With ‘Operation Kaalnemi’, Uttarakhand has drawn a bold Lakshman Rekha, and those who cross it will face the consequences.
