A newly opened café owned by Indian comedian Kapil Sharma and his wife Ginni Chatrath was attacked late Wednesday night in Surrey, British Columbia, prompting a multi-agency investigation into possible links to Khalistani extremist groups operating abroad.
The establishment, Kaps Caffe, located in the 8400 block of 120 Street near the Surrey–North Delta border, was struck by multiple rounds of gunfire shortly before 2 a.m., according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Authorities confirmed at least eight bullets hit the property, damaging the cafe’s façade as well as adjacent residential structures. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, although staff members were present during the incident.
Surrey Police Service has cordoned off the area and initiated a forensic investigation. Surveillance footage is being reviewed to identify the perpetrators. Officials stated that no arrests have been made, and suspect information remains undisclosed as of now.
Khalistani Extremist Claims Involvement
The attack has drawn heightened scrutiny after Germany-based Khalistani terrorist Harjit Singh alias Laddi, a wanted operative of the banned Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), allegedly claimed responsibility. Canadian authorities suspect the involvement of Laddi’s gang in the strike, which may have been part of a larger campaign of targeted intimidation against Indian-origin figures abroad.
Laddi, designated a high-risk individual by Indian agencies, is also wanted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with several terror activities, including the 2024 assassination of VHP leader Prabhakar in Punjab. The NIA has announced a ₹10 lakh reward for information leading to his arrest.
Part of a Disturbing Trend
Officials are viewing the incident as part of a troubling trend in which overseas Khalistan-linked networks are using violence and extortion to intimidate Indian-origin business owners, particularly those with public profiles. Kaps Caffe, which recently held its soft opening and received attention for its upscale ambiance with Pink and White floral decor, and Trendsetting menu, appears to have been deliberately targeted.
Sources said investigators are probing whether the Sharma family had received threats or extortion demands prior to the attack.
No Public Statement Yet from Kapil Sharma
Kapil Sharma, widely known for his long-running television comedy shows in India, has not issued a public statement in response to the incident. The attack has stirred concern among residents and the Indian diaspora in Surrey, where tensions have been growing amid rising Khalistani-related activities.
Law enforcement agencies in both Canada and India are closely monitoring developments, with efforts underway to determine whether the shooting was an isolated act or part of a coordinated strategy by extremist networks.
