In a shocking incident that unfolded during a honeymoon trip in Meghalaya, Sonam Raghuvanshi is accused of fleeing the scene after her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, was fatally attacked. Authorities allege that one of the suspects, Vishal Singh, assaulted Raja with a machete. Sonam reportedly returned only after Raja had died from his injuries.
Police Recreate Crime Scene at Wei Sawdong Falls
Investigators from East Khasi Hills district revisited the location near Wei Sawdong Falls, where Raja’s body was found earlier this month. The scene was reconstructed on Tuesday as part of the ongoing investigation into the gruesome killing that has attracted attention in both Meghalaya and Madhya Pradesh.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) brought all suspects including Sonam and the alleged assailants to the site near Sohra, about 65 kilometers from Shillong, to recreate the sequence of events that led to the murder.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Murder
According to police reports, Sonam allegedly took Raja to a remote area under the pretense of clicking a photo. Once they reached a cliff edge, Vishal Singh is said to have attacked Raja with a sharp weapon. Raja cried out in pain following the first strike, prompting Sonam to flee the scene.
“She disappeared from the spot right after the initial blow and returned only after confirming he was dead,” a senior police official said.
After the killing, the suspects reportedly threw Raja’s body into the gorge. Investigators believe Sonam played a role in helping dispose of the body before the group fled the location on a scooter.
During this phase of the investigation, a second machete was discovered at the bottom of the gorge, something the police were unaware of until the crime scene was reconstructed. Earlier assumptions were that only one weapon had been used.
Investigation Reveals Complex Motives
During questioning, the suspects shared disturbing details suggesting that financial motives may not have been the only reason behind the murder. The inquiry is now considering possible personal conflicts or emotional entanglements, including an alleged romantic relationship between Sonam and co-accused Raj Kushwaha.
Meghalaya’s Director General of Police, Idashisha Nongrang, stated that investigators are examining all possible angles. “It’s unusual for someone to harbor such animosity toward a spouse so soon after marriage. We are not restricting our probe to just a romantic motive,” she said.
She also confirmed that the police have collected substantial evidence and are working to finalize the case.
Custody and Legal Proceedings Ongoing
Police are expected to request an extension of custody for all those arrested. In the meantime, over 2,000 kilometers away in Indore, Raja’s family recently held his ‘Tehrvi’, a traditional 13th-day post-death ritual which was attended by close relatives, including Sonam’s brother Govind, who has also been summoned for questioning.
Investigators are now finalizing the chargesheet and gathering supplementary evidence. Raja’s family has vowed to pursue justice and ensure the harshest penalties for those responsible. The case is likely to be taken to court once the investigation report is completed.
