In the sacred land where devotees arrive seeking salvation, a tragic incident has shaken the nation. Early Sunday morning, around 5:20 a.m., a helicopter flying from Kedarnath to Guptkashi crashed in the densely forested Gauri Mai Khark area of Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district.
All seven people on board — including a 23-month-old infant and the pilot, lost their lives.
Initial reports cite poor visibility and adverse weather conditions as the likely cause of the crash. The chopper, on a short 10-minute flight, lost control and went down between Gaurikund and Sonprayag in a remote forested patch.

According to the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA), the victims included six pilgrims from Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. For these families, the yatra ended in irreparable loss.

On June 7, a separate helicopter experienced technical failure during takeoff, leading to an emergency landing on the Rudraprayag-Gaurikund highway. The tail rotor struck a parked car, and the chopper narrowly avoided crashing into buildings. Fortunately, no one was harmed.
These recurring incidents highlight the urgent need for systemic safety audits and real-time monitoring — not to spread fear, but to prevent disaster.
Swift Response from Authorities, Call for Long-Term Strategy
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his grief over the crash:
“Very sad news has been received about a helicopter crash in Rudraprayag district. SDRF, local administration and other rescue teams are engaged in relief and rescue operations. I pray to Baba Kedar for the safety of all the travellers.”
