The family of Raja Raghuvanshi, the young groom who was allegedly murdered during his honeymoon in Meghalaya, is demanding a deeper investigation into the role of his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, who has been arrested in connection with the crime.
The family is calling for detailed questioning of not just Sonam, but also her parents and brother, believing more people may have been involved in planning or concealing the crime.
Raja Raghuvanshi and Sonam were married on May 11, 2025. Just over a week later, the couple left for a honeymoon to Meghalaya. According to Raja’s family, Sonam planned the trip herself and made Raja wear jewelry reportedly worth ₹10 lakh—details the family now finds suspicious.
On May 23, Raja was reported missing near Sohra (Cherrapunji). A search operation led to the discovery of his body on June 2 in a gorge near the Wei Sawdong waterfalls.
Investigation Findings
Police allege that Sonam conspired with her former partner, Raj Kushwaha, to have Raja killed. The investigation suggests that Sonam lured Raja into a remote forest area where he was attacked and killed by contract killers hired by the couple.
Authorities have arrested Sonam, Raj, and three other individuals believed to be the hired assailants. Key pieces of evidence reportedly include blood-stained clothing, a machete, CCTV footage, and digital communication between the suspects. A blood-soaked raincoat found in Sonam’s possession further strengthened suspicions.
After the murder, Sonam allegedly traveled across several states before surrendering in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, on June 9. All five accused are currently in police custody in Shillong.
Family Demands Wider Probe
Raja’s family has raised concerns that others—especially members of Sonam’s family—may have known about or participated in the crime. They are urging police to conduct narco-analysis tests on Sonam, her parents, and her brother, and have requested that the investigation be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Raja’s brother told reporters that the family is not satisfied with the current progress of the investigation and believes the full extent of the conspiracy is yet to be uncovered.
Sonam’s Brother Breaks Ties
In a notable development, Sonam’s own brother has publicly supported Raja’s family. He stated that he is “certain of her guilt” and has severed all ties with her.
Meanwhile, Sonam’s parents have denied any involvement and accused the police of bias. They too have requested a CBI probe, claiming the ongoing investigation is one-sided.
Next Steps
Police are expected to continue their custodial interrogation of the accused over the next several days, including a reconstruction of the crime scene. The case, widely referred to in the media as the “honeymoon murder,” continues to attract national attention.
Raja Raghuvanshi’s family remains hopeful that a more comprehensive investigation will bring them closer to justice.
