A 19-year-old woman, identified as Neha, tragically died after being thrown off the fifth-floor terrace of her home in the Jyoti Nagar area of Delhi on Monday morning. The accused, Taufiq, believed to be a stalker, was arrested late Tuesday in Uttar Pradesh after an extensive manhunt by Delhi Police.
According to police, the attack occurred in the Ashok Nagar locality. CCTV footage and investigations revealed that Taufiq entered the building wearing a burqa to hide his identity. He went up to the terrace where Neha was doing laundry and confronted her. After a brief argument, he allegedly strangled her with her dupatta and pushed her from the terrace.
Neha fell onto a pile of bricks on the ground below. Locals rushed her to a nearby hospital, but she died from her injuries a few hours later.
Swift Police Response and Arrest
After the incident, police teams launched a manhunt across Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. Taufiq was apprehended Tuesday night in UP’s Moradabad district, where his family resides. He had been living in Delhi with his brother and was working at a warehouse and occasionally helping at a grocery shop in the Ashok Nagar area.
Originally booked for attempted murder, police have now added murder charges against the stalker to the FIR.
Family and Community in Shock
Neha’s family explained that the building has multiple flats and the terrace door is typically left unlocked. On Monday morning, around 7:30 AM, Neha went to the terrace to check the water tank and do laundry. Around 20 minutes later, Taufiq arrived in disguise. Her father, who was also headed to the terrace, reportedly witnessed part of the assault.
By the time others reached the rooftop, Taufiq had already fled, and Neha was lying injured on the ground.
Her sister was asleep at the time, and their mother was standing on the balcony but did not initially recognize the burqa-clad stalker.
Local Reaction and Security Measures
The brutal nature of the crime caused widespread outrage in the neighborhood. Mandoli Road Market remained shut on Tuesday in protest. Local shopkeepers also announced stricter hiring policies, stating they would now verify the identity documents of all employees.
Police deployed additional forces in the area to prevent unrest and maintain peace. Neha’s body was sent for postmortem on Tuesday, and the cremation was conducted later that day under heavy police security.
A Grim Reminder of Safety Concerns
This case has once again raised concerns over women’s safety and stalking-related crimes in the capital. Neha’s death, allegedly at the hands of someone she had tried to avoid, has left the community shaken and sparked calls for stronger protection for women and stricter enforcement of existing laws.
