What Happened?
A 24-year-old first-year law student was allegedly gang-raped on June 25, 2025, within the premises of South Calcutta Law College in the Kasba area. The victim reported the assault to the police, leading to the swift arrest of three individuals: Manojit Mishra, a former student and practicing lawyer; Zaib Ahmed, a current student; and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, another student. Preliminary medical examinations have corroborated the victim’s allegations, revealing signs of sexual assault. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and political controversy, with opposition parties accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress of failing to ensure women’s safety. The National Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognizance of the case, demanding a time-bound investigation and appropriate support for the survivor.
As calls for accountability grow louder, this move signals the party’s intent to put pressure on state authorities and advocate for systemic reforms in the handling of crimes against women.
