Four people, including the Head of Marketing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and employees from DNA Event Management, have been arrested after a deadly stampede outside Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium left 11 people dead.
The tragedy unfolded during what was meant to be a celebratory event for RCB fans — but it quickly turned into chaos.
Bengaluru Police confirmed that Nikhil Sosale, RCB’s marketing head, and three DNA Event Management staffers — Sunil Matthew, Kiran, and Sumanth — were arrested at the Bengaluru airport while reportedly trying to fly to Mumbai. They are now being questioned by investigators.
What Caused the Stampede?
Police say the event was promoted without proper permissions. Despite being denied official approval for a victory parade, Sosale posted on social media that fans could collect free entry passes at the stadium. He claimed tickets would be handed out at Gates 9 and 10 at 1 p.m., with entry starting at 3 p.m.
That post sparked a massive crowd, with thousands showing up. Only 3 out of the stadium’s 21 gates were reportedly opened, leading to severe overcrowding and panic.
The sudden surge in the crowd created a stampede-like situation, leaving 11 people dead and many others injured.
Police also allege that the DNA Event Management team acted under Sosale’s direction and failed to make proper crowd arrangements.
Officials Under the Scanner
Bengaluru Police have also raided the homes of senior officials from the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), including its Secretary and Treasurer. Investigations suggest that KSCA, RCB, and DNA Events jointly organized the celebration without necessary permissions.
In the wake of the tragedy, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the suspension of five senior police officers, including Bengaluru’s Police Commissioner.
“This is one of the most heartbreaking incidents I’ve witnessed in my public life,” he said. “It should never have happened.”
Legal Action Underway
A case has been registered under multiple serious charges, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, causing hurt, negligence, and unlawful assembly under the newly implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
