A medical examination has confirmed multiple injuries on a first-year law student from South Calcutta Law College who has accused three men of gang-raping her on campus on June 25. According to police sources, the report details abrasion marks around her neck and chest, along with bite marks, scratches, and clear evidence of forced penetration.
The 19-year-old survivor alleged that she was sexually assaulted by a former student and two senior students inside a room adjacent to the student union office. Her medical findings are consistent with the statement she gave to the police, strengthening the case.
Who Are the Accused?
All three accused have been arrested by Kolkata Police. The main accused, Monojit Mishra (31), is a former student and currently holds a position in the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) in South Kolkata. The other two — Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20) — are both current students of the college.
All were produced before a local court and have been sent to police custody until July 1. Their mobile phones have been seized and are undergoing forensic analysis to determine whether the alleged incident. The mobile phone devices of the three accused have been seized and sent for forensic tests, the officer added. “We are trying to find out whether the video footage was forwarded to other numbers or not,” he said, adding that the mandatory medical tests on the victim were being conducted.
The incident at the law college brought back the horrific memories of the rape and murder of an intern inside RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in north Kolkata in August last year.
What’s In The Complaint?
In her complaint lodged on June 26, the victim said she had gone to the college to fill a form for a test and was forced to stay back in the union room even after it was completed.“Then one of the three accused proposed her to marry but she refused telling them she was already in a relationship,” the police officer said as reported by the news agency.
Subsequently, Mishra allegedly ordered the campus gate to be locked. In the evening, he expressed romantic interest and made unwanted advances, which she rejected. She alleged that he then forced himself on her.
“I denied and fought back. I cried and asked him to let me go. I told them I have a boyfriend and I love my boyfriend. But he did not listen,” she told the police.
Mishra allegedly threatened to harm her boyfriend and falsely implicate her parents in criminal cases before confining her within the college premises. She alleged in her complaint that he hit her with a hockey stick. During the incident, she experienced breathing difficulties and asked for an inhaler. After using it, she was taken to the security guard’s room on the ground floor, next to the students’ union office, where the assault allegedly continued.
“I touched his feet but he didn’t let me go …,” she told the police in the complaint, adding that while Mishra was allegedly raping her, the other two stood by and watched.
Action Taken
Taking suo motu cognisance of the incident, the National Women’s Commission asked the Kolkata Police to file a detailed action taken report within three days. Workers of the Congress and the AIDSO held protests before the Kasba Police Station during the day before they were forcefully removed by police.
TMCP president Trinankur Bhattacharya said Mishra had never been the organisation’s unit president at the institution as the students’ body has been defunct for the past few years.
