A police constable from Noida was shot dead after a mob attacked a police team attempting to arrest a wanted criminal in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad on Sunday night.
The incident occurred in Nahal village, under the Masuri police station jurisdiction, when a team from Noida’s Phase-3 police station launched a raid to arrest Qadir, a notorious criminal with over two dozen cases registered against him.
As the police arrived at Qadir’s residence, a crowd gathered and quickly turned hostile. The officers were first pelted with stones, followed by indiscriminate gunfire from members of the mob. Constable Saurabh Singh sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was rushed to Yashoda Hospital, where he was declared dead.
Two to three other UP policemen were also injured in the attack but are currently in stable condition and receiving treatment.
Qadir, who has 24 criminal cases against him, managed to escape amid the chaos. According to officials, he and his accomplices have been on the run since the incident. Multiple police teams have been deployed to track them down, and an extensive manhunt is underway in the region.
Senior officers from the Noida Commissionerate visited the scene to assess the situation. The incident has sent shockwaves through the department, with tributes pouring in for the fallen constable.
The Masuri police station has registered a case under 13 sections of the Indian Penal Code and Arms Act, including charges of murder, rioting, and assault. The FIR was filed based on a complaint by a sub-inspector from the Noida police team.
Officials have assured that all those involved in the attack will be brought to justice, and strict action will be taken against the perpetrators.
