A terrorist was killed during an ongoing gunfight with security forces in the Chatru forest area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, the Indian Army confirmed on Friday. Based on credible intelligence inputs, the encounter is part of a joint operation launched by the 16 Army Corps and the Jammu and Kashmir Police.

The search and cordon operation were initiated on April 9 in the dense forests of Chatru where later in the evening, contact with the terrorists was established. The battle resulted in the neutralization of one terrorist. Security forces, however, believe that more terrorists could be in hiding in the area and the operation is ongoing.
The Indian Army highlighted the difficult conditions, noting that the operation was being carried out in hostile terrain and adverse weather.

“Despite challenges, relentless efforts by our brave soldiers continue,” a statement by the Army’s White Knight Corps 16 Corps read.
Suspicious Vehicle With India Post Markings Seized in Jammu
In a related development, Jammu and Kashmir Police seized a suspicious vehicle on Thursday night in Jammu, further tightening security across the region. The red-colored vehicle, which was marked with India Post but did not have a registration plate, was stopped while on a routine check in Narwal.
The driver is said to have left the vehicle and escaped from the scene. During a closer examination, officials found a specially designed compartment within, raising suspicions that the vehicle might have been used for carrying contraband or materials associated with anti-national activities.
SP (City) Ajay Sharma stated that initial investigation also suggests the vehicle could be connected to bovine smuggling. A full inquiry is currently underway to determine the vehicle’s origin and possible involvement in unlawful operations.
