In a heartfelt gesture of commitment and compassion, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla fulfilled a six-year-old promise made to the family of Pulwama martyr Hemraj Meena by attending and participating in the wedding of Meena’s eldest daughter in Sangod, Kota, on April 11. Hemraj Meena, a CRPF jawan, was one of the 40 Indian security personnel martyred in the brutal terrorist attack in Pulwama in 2019. At the time of the martyrdom, Om Birla had assured Meena’s widow, Madhubala, that he would stand by her like a brother and take responsibility for her family. Since then, Madhubala has been tying Rakhi to Birla every Rakshabandhan, solidifying a bond that has grown stronger over the years.
True to his word, Om Birla took part in the traditional Rajasthani wedding ritual known as ‘Mayra’ or ‘Bhaat,’ which is performed by the maternal uncle of the bride. He not only attended the wedding of Reena Meena, the eldest daughter of Madhubala and martyr Hemraj Meena, but also carried out all the customs and rituals expected of a brother. Sangod MLA and Minister of State for Energy, Hiranlal Nagar, was also present at the ceremony, standing beside Birla in support of the family.
In a deeply emotional moment, Om Birla draped a traditional Chunari called ‘Mayra’ on Madhubala as a symbol of his unwavering support and blessings. In return, Madhubala performed aarti and tilak, honoring him with the respect and love due to a brother. Birla also visited and paid floral tributes at the statue of Hemraj Meena, offering his respects to the fallen soldier. Sharing his sentiments on X (formerly Twitter), Birla wrote, “My heart is filled with pride and joy that our daughter Reena is now going to start her new life. This occasion is not only full of emotion for the family, but also a moment of pride when years of upbringing, values, and hopes come to fruition. Martyr Hemraj Meena Ji’s unique sacrifice and unwavering patriotism for the nation have always inspired us.”
The Pulwama attack left the Meena family shattered, but Om Birla’s consistent emotional and material support has been a beacon of hope. Madhubala, mother of six including four sons and two daughters has received his help in raising and educating the children. Relatives of the family lauded Om Birla’s dedication, noting that he has truly stood by his word, supporting the family through joys and sorrows. With the wedding of Reena Meena now complete, Birla’s gesture remains a powerful testament to promises kept and the enduring spirit of national unity.
