Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday issued a stern warning to private schools against unjustified fee hikes, stating that no institution has the right to harass parents and children. Gupta said her government is acting on complaints from parents and will be issuing notices to the schools in question.
“Parents have been approaching me with concerns. No school has the right to threaten or harass families with abnormal fee increases,” Gupta told reporters. She emphasized that rules regarding fee revisions must be strictly followed, and any school found violating these norms will face consequences.
The controversy gained momentum after parents from a private school in Dwarka alleged their children were confined to the school library for nearly 25 days in what they described as a “library arrest.” They claimed this was the school’s way of punishing students during a protest over high fees.
In response, Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood said an inspection team visited the school and confirmed that SDMs citywide have been asked to investigate schools for regulatory compliance. A special committee including the deputy director of education and the director of accounts has been formed to probe fee hikes. Also, a special email ID has been initiated for parents to complain directly.

The problem has initiated a political blame game. AAP leaders blamed the BJP for the issues. In response the Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva rejected the claims, saying that the AAP is frustrated due to their defeat at the polls. He also said that SDMs have been asked to audit 1,665 private schools for transparency.
