Controversial Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap who went high on Brahmin hate has issued a formal apology following public outrage over his remark targeting the Brahmin community. The controversy erupted after the ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ director responded to online criticism regarding his support for the upcoming film Phule, which focuses on the lives of Dalit social reformers Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule. The uproar began when Anurag Kashyap, responding to comments opposing Phule’s release, made an inflammatory statement online “Brahmin pe main mootoonga… koi problem?” which translates to ‘I will urinate on Brahmins… any problem?’.
The comment soon prompted widespread condemnation, prompting criticism from a wide range of organizations and people, from lawyers to social media users across the political spectrum.
Following mounting public pressure, Anurag Kashyap apologized for his derogatory comment on social media.
In a lengthy post, he conceded that anger had gotten the better of him and acknowledged that his choice of words was utterly inapt.
“In my anger, I forgot my decorum while responding to someone and ended up speaking ill of the entire Brahmin community,” he wrote.
“Today, they are all hurt by me. My family is hurt by me. Many intellectuals, whom I respect, are hurt by my anger and the way I spoke.” Anurag Kashyap claimed that he did not intend to offend the entire community and that many Brahmins have been an important part of his personal and professional life.
He expressed a commitment to be more mindful and control his anger in future engagements, adding, “Going forward, I will work to ensure this does not happen again. I will use the right words to address an issue.”

Despite his public apology, legal trouble has followed. BJP Maharashtra’s legal advisory department head, advocate Ashutosh J Dubey, filed an FIR against Kashyap. Ashutosh Dubey had called the remark “derogatory” and sought legal action under relevant sections of hate speech and promoting enmity between communities. Although some have appreciated the apology of Anurag Kashyap, others believe that the legal procedure should be adopted to hold him responsible for his statements.
