Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has criticized comedian Kunal Kamra for his controversial remarks about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, emphasizing that freedom of expression should not be misused for personal attacks. The remarks, which were made during a stand-up comedy show, led to a significant public uproar. Shiv Sena workers vandalized the venue in Mumbai, reacting to Kamra’s comments about Shinde.
Yogi Adityanath expressed disappointment over the incident, stating that some individuals treat freedom of speech as a “birthright,” using it to further divide the country. According to Yogi Adityanath, freedom of expression is a right, but it should not be exploited to make personal or disparaging attacks against others. The Chief Minister stressed that such an attitude must not be tolerated as it is contrary to democracy.
The scandal broke out after Kamra made disparaging remarks about Eknath Shinde during his recent stand-up special, which he posted on YouTube. Shiv Sena workers went on a rampage against the comedy studio in Mumbai where Kamra had performed after the comedian’s comments. Post the incident, Maharashtra’s Khar Police issued a summon to Kamra, requesting him to report before the investigating officer. However, Kamra was reportedly out of Mumbai at the time. The police registered an FIR against Kamra for his statement, which was then shifted to Khar police for investigation.
In spite of the criticism, Kamra defended his statement, saying that he would never apologize for his action. In a statement he put up on his social media pages, Kamra justified his right to do comedy, stating that entertainment joints are just platforms for artists. He went on to say that such establishments have no control over the material of the show of the comedian and political parties regarding what is being presented. Kamra likened the assault on the establishment to a lack of reason, comparing it to overturning a lorry of tomatoes because one didn’t like the butter chicken they were presented with. Kamra’s take is evidence of his belief in upholding freedom of expression despite controversy.
The present controversy highlights political leaders’ contradictions, freedom of speech, and the role of comedy in public discourse.
