“L2: Empuraan,” released on March 27, 2025, was marketed as Mohanlal’s grand return to the big screen, a sequel to “Lucifer” that would take Malayalam cinema to new heights. Instead, it has turned out to be nothing more than a deceitful propaganda film that shamelessly vilifies Hindus, the BJP, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and written by Murali Gopy, the movie is a blatant attempt at pushing a leftist agenda under the guise of storytelling. What could have been a thrilling sequel has been reduced to a political hit job with Mohanlal serving as a mere pawn in their ideological game.
Much like Rajinikanth’s “Kaala,” which was drenched in anti-Hindu and anti-BJP narratives, “Empuraan” follows the same disgraceful path. In “Kaala,” the Ramayana was twisted to paint Ravana as a hero while mocking Hindu traditions. Similarly, “Empuraan” introduces the fictional Akhanda Shakti Morcha (ASM), a thinly veiled BJP stand-in, portraying them as violent and intolerant. Hindu karsevaks are reduced to caricatures of mindless goons, while the so-called ‘secular’ forces are painted as saviors.
The film even references the 2002 Gujarat Riots, deliberately portraying Hindus as bloodthirsty villains while presenting Muslims as helpless victims. This one-sided, misleading portrayal makes it abundantly clear that the film’s sole purpose is to demonize Hindus and push a divisive narrative.
Kerala has long struggled with the rise of Islamist extremism, with regions like Malappuram becoming hotbeds of radicalization. Love Jihad is an undeniable reality affecting both Hindu and Christian families, yet this film conveniently ignores these pressing issues. Instead, it goes out of its way to target Hindus while giving radical Islamists a free pass. The hypocrisy is glaring, and the agenda behind this selective targeting is painfully obvious.
Prithviraj Sukumaran, who fancies himself a filmmaker with a cause, has once again exposed his anti-Hindu bias. His direction in “Empuraan” is not about storytelling but about sermonizing. Every scene feels like a calculated attempt to discredit Modi, the BJP, and Hindu nationalism. Rather than creating an engaging narrative, he turns the film into a 3-hour-long lecture on his distorted version of secularism.
Mohanlal, once a universally loved star, has tarnished his own legacy by aligning with this propaganda. His role in “Empuraan” does little justice to his talent, as he is merely a puppet in Prithviraj and Murali Gopy’s political play. Fans who once admired him across all ideological lines are now left questioning his choices.
The biggest culprit behind this agenda-driven disaster is its writer, Murali Gopy. His past social media activity reveals a clear bias, showing admiration for leftist ideologues, Marxist figures, and Christian missionaries known for their conversion activities in India. His posts celebrate Francis Xavier, infamous for his role in the forced conversions of Hindus, and Mother Teresa, whose missionary work has long been criticized for ulterior motives. Additionally, his alignment with AAP and Congress further highlights his anti-BJP stance, making it evident why Empuraan is structured to discredit Hindutva while glorifying its opponents.
In the end, “L2: Empuraan” is nothing but a well-packaged political agenda. It is a disgraceful attack on Hindu culture and a shameless attempt to distort history and current political realities. Rather than celebrating Mohanlal’s return, this film should be rejected for what it truly is – divisive, manipulative, and an insult to the intelligence of Indian audiences.
