A disturbing video recently hit social media which has drawn attention towards the alarming rise of attacks on elderly parents. The viral video has spaked widespread outrage with netizens demanding severe action against the accused doctor and her kids. The Shocking Incident
Dr. Priyadarshini N, who practices at Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru, has been booked under different sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on the complaint filed by her father-in-law J Narasimaiah. Narasimaiah noted that his son, Naveen Kumar, married Priyadarshini in 2007. However, because of constant tiffs, the two sought a divorce. On the night of 10 March 2024, Priyadarshini, with her daughter and son, visited her in-laws’ residence at RHCS Layout, West Bengaluru, at about 8:30 pm.
As per the allegations, during this visit, she abused and assaulted her in-laws, issued death threats, and even physically attacked her father-in-law on his back and head. The elderly couple, who already had a host of ailments, was subjected to this chilling experience in their own home. A video of the incident shows Priyadarshini dragging her mother-in-law by the hair while her daughter is seen kicking her grandmother.
A post on X (formerly Twitter) by a user who uploaded the video claims that Priyadarshini has been harassing her in-laws for over a decade. It further alleges that the elderly couple was forced to leave their own house and live in a rented home due to her mistreatment. Despite a court ruling that she had no right to visit them, Priyadarshini and her children forcibly entered their home and assaulted them.
In this case of attack on elderly parents, the Bengaluru police have registered a case under sections 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), 126 (wrongful restraint), 351 (criminal intimidation), and 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Since these offenses are bailable, the police will record her statement before filing a chargesheet based on the evidence collected.
The Disrespect Towards Parents: A Dangerous Trend
The event has again highlighted the increasing disrespect for parents in modern society. India, a nation that has always been very family-oriented, is experiencing a shocking trend of brutal assaults on elderly parents, shaming the traditional Indian family system. The Vedas and scriptures teach us how important it is to respect our parents and elderly, yet incidents of abuse of elderly persons are on the rise.
Following the shocking incident, a user wrote, “This is more than horrifying! No elderly parents should have to suffer such inhumane treatment, especially from someone entrusted to be family.”
Another user added, “Severe punishments must be enforced, and the judiciary needs reforms to prevent similar incidents in the future.”
Lessons from Bhagwaan Ram: The Ideal Son
If we look back at Indian history and religious teachings, Bhagwaan Ram is revered for his obedience and devotion to his parents. Even though he was the rightful king, he voluntarily accepted exile for fourteen years to keep his father’s promise. His devotion and respect for his parents are an everlasting lesson for all of mankind.
With the Bengaluru shocking incident bringing to the fore the alarming trend of attacks on elderly parents, it is really disturbing to see how kids are turning against their own parents. When did we begin to justify such brutality? Are we going towards a society where relationships are determined by convenience and self-interest and not by love and responsibility?
Need for Stricter Laws to stop the attacks on Elderly Parents
Cases of elder abuse are rising in India, and the existing laws do not seem to deter such behavior effectively. The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, was formed to offer economic and emotional assistance to elderly parents. Yet, most elderly parents still tolerate it silently, not daring to take legal recourse against their own offspring.
It is time the government tightens these laws and sees to it that there are tougher punishments for those who physically, emotionally, or financially abuse their parents. Society must also take a stand and condemn such behavior instead of turning a blind eye to it.
The attacks on elderly parents by their own children is a disgrace to Indian culture and values. This incident serves as a wake-up call for society. The kids need to be trained at a young age to respect and treat their elders with kindness. Strong laws need to be in place to secure helpless senior citizens from such savagery. If we do not do something about it now, we might lose the very fabric of what makes India such a land of close-knit families and ethical values.
Let us not let cruelty come in the place of compassion and give a free pass to this alarming trend of attacks on elderly parents. Let us preserve the heritage of respect and love for our parents, just as Bhagwaan Ram did. The time is plain—tough laws, moral education, and a societal effort to protect our parents from abuse. Only then can we guarantee a society that respects its roots and customs.
