In its legislative party meeting on the 19th of February, BJP has declared the name of Rekha Gupta as the next Chief Minister of Delhi. Rekha Gupta one of BJP’s elected MLA from the Shalimar Bagh Assembly seat has been elected as the BJP’s legislative head.
Rekha Gupta’s political career began with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), where she served as the Secretary of Delhi University. Her deep political roots and grassroots connections make her a formidable leader. Her family hails from Julana, Haryana, where they are engaged in business, while her political and academic growth took place in Delhi. Her father worked for the State Bank of India, which led to the family shifting to Delhi. However, she has maintained strong ties with her ancestral village, visiting regularly and staying connected with her roots.
Rekha Gupta belongs to the Vaishya (Baniya) community, a significant voter base for the BJP in Delhi. Given the political and demographic advantage, her selection as the Chief Minister will provide strategic benefits to the party. Moreover, currently, the BJP does not have a female Chief Minister in any state, and appointing Rekha Gupta will send a strong political message. Her leadership skills, experience, and popularity made her a compelling choice for the role.
On the 8th February, the results of the Delhi Assembly Elections were out and the Bharatiya Janata Party had secured a landslide victory thrashing the Aam Aadmi Party which ruled over Delhi for the two consecutive terms. The Bharatiya Janata Party had gained the support of the National Party after 27 long years and this time with full majority. The Electoral defeat of the Aam Aadmi Party was nothing short of a humiliation with nearly all its big party leaders having to taste the sourness of beating. BJP secured 48 seats out of 70, while AAP could only fetch 22 seats.
