The results of the Delhi Election have ended the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) 27-year-long political exile in the national capital. The Bharatiya Janata Party has secured a landslide victory thrashing the Aam Aadmi Party which ruled over Delhi for the two consecutive terms. The Electoral defeat of the Aam Aadmi Party was nothing short of a humiliation with nearly all its senior party leaders having to taste the sourness of beating.
With nearly 13% of Delhi’s electorate being Muslim, their votes play a crucial role in several constituencies, including Seelampur, Okhla, Mustafabad, Babarpur, Chandni Chowk, Matia Mahal, and Ballimaran. Despite this, the BJP did not field any Muslim candidates, instead focusing on consolidating Hindu votes in Muslim-majority constituencies. Before the elections, exit polls suggested that a section of Muslim voters had shifted towards the BJP which was slightly visible in the results. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress fought for a share of the Muslim vote, but Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM complicated the race by fielding candidates in two constituencies. AIMIM’s candidates fielded its candidates Shifa-ur-Rahman Khan and Tahir Hussain who were one of the main culprits in the anti-Hindu Delhi Riots.
In a major win in one of the Muslim dominated areas, BJP candidate Mohan Singh Bisht emerged victorious in the Mustafabad constituency, securing 85,215 votes. He defeated AAP candidate Aadil Ahmed Khan, who received 67,637 votes, by a margin of 17,578 votes. Notably AIMIM fielded Tahir Hussain from this constituency who was the main accused in the Anti-Hindu Delhi riots case. Tahir Hussain managed to secure 33,474 votes and split the muslim votes which could have otherwise consolidated in favour of AAP or Congress.
In Seelampur, AAP’s Chaudhary Zubair Ahmed secured victory with 79,009 votes, defeating BJP’s Anil Kumar Sharma, who got 36,532 votes. Congress’s Abdul Rahman came third.
Okhla saw AAP’s Amanatullah Khan emerging victorious, followed by AIMIM’s Shifa-ur-Rahman Khan, with BJP’s Manish Chaudhary in third place.
AAP’s Gopal Rai retained Babarpur, defeating BJP’s Anil Kumar Vashisht by 18,994 votes.
In Chandni Chowk, AAP’s Pundardeep Singh Sahni won against BJP’s Satish Jain.
Matia Mahal saw a massive victory for AAP’s Ale Mohammed Iqbal over BJP’s Deepti Indora.
In Ballimaran, AAP’s Imran Hussain defeated BJP’s Kamal Bagdi by 29,823 votes.
