The inauguration of the Z-Morh Tunnel on 13 January 2025 marks a monumental, promising connectivity to the Ladakh strategic region. At 8,652 feet, 6.5 kilometers of road connect Gagangir and the beautiful tourist town of Sonamarg, situated at just a distance of 68 km from Srinagar, which would dramatically reduce the present travel time. The travel journey, now being more than two hours, can easily be completed within 15 minutes.
A Strategic Accessway
One of the major reasons for building the Z-Morh Tunnel is that it will bypass the avalanche-prone stretches of the Srinagar-Sonamarg road. For decades, people and the military had been grappling with major logistic problems, especially during the worst winters when the Zojila Pass—a key mountain pass located at 11,575 feet—would be covered with deep snowfall, cutting off road connectivity to Ladakh.
