A Sealdah court has found Sanjay Roy guilty of raping and murdering a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The verdict was delivered by Justice Anirban Das on Saturday, 18th of January and the sentencing will be announced on the 20th January.
The court confirmed that Roy has been charged under Sections 64, 66, and 103/1 of the BNS. According to the court, he entered the hospital’s seminar room, assaulted the doctor, and murdered her while she was resting.
Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer at the hospital, pleaded innocence, claiming he was falsely accused. “I haven’t done this. The real culprits are being let go while I am being framed,” he told the court. The case, which began after the doctor’s body was discovered on August 9, triggered widespread protests. Roy was arrested soon after.
Separately, in November last year, the CBI filed a chargesheet concerning financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College. Among those named in the report were Sandip Ghosh, Dr. Ashish Kumar Pandey, Biplab Singha, Suman Hazra, and Afsar Ali Khan. This investigation followed a directive from the Calcutta High Court.
Sandip Ghosh was also questioned in connection with the murder case, and the CBI conducted a polygraph test as part of their probe. Delays in filing the chargesheet led to bail being granted to several accused individuals, including Abhijit Mondal and Sandip Ghosh. Earlier today, the father of the deceased doctor stated that the court would decide the appropriate punishment.
On 9th of August, 2024, a 31 year old female doctor was brutally murdered at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. A man named, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested after coming out of CCTV but it is suspected that Sanjay Roy is a mere scapegoat, there are big names being involved in the rape and murder of the female doctor. It is also anticipated that there is some hidden illegal activities that run at the hospital which the female doctor would have come across which led to her rape and murder.
