On January 3, the stage shall be set for Prime Minister Narendra Modi since the latter will lay the foundation stone of an upcoming new college in Najafgarh, Delhi, named after the great freedom fighter, Veer Savarkar. The college has been announced and approved by the Executive Council of Delhi University (DU) back in 2021. The college will come up at a cost of approximately ₹140 crores and the place is also going to act as a key educational center.
Veer Savarkar was an important figure in India’s freedom struggle. His activism, writings, and contributions to the law have been of great national pride. His efforts have been appreciated through institutions and initiatives across India in the last few decades. The new college in his name is a result of his sacrifices and vision towards an independent India.
Despite an unparalleled legacy, the freedom fighter has suffered malicious campaign to tarnish his image, especially from the Congress camp led by Gandhi scion, Rahul. The visionary freedom fighter, who championed the cause of social justice apart from galvanising the armed revolutionaries to throw out the Britishers, is also considered pioneer of Hindutva. Inadverently embarassing its Maharashtra I.N.D.I alliance partner Shiv Sena (UBT), Rahul Gandhi has often led smear campaign against the Hindutva icon, Veer Savarkar. In this backdrop, PM Modi’s decision to lay the foundation of Veer Savarkar College in the heart of Delhi reflects the ruling party’s assertive stance on this front especially ahead of the Delhi assembly elections.

Along with the Veer Savarkar College, Prime Minister Modi will lay the foundation stones for two new campuses of Delhi University. The camp will be developed at Surajmal Vihar in East Delhi with an estimated budget of ₹373 crore, while the other one at Dwarka, West Delhi, would cost ₹107 crore. These new campuses will increase access to higher education for students in East and West Delhi who currently lack adequate educational infrastructure.
The land for these colleges has been scheduled to be given in Najafgarh and Fatehpur Beri, both of which will have new colleges and campuses. The development is likely to bring about a significant number of educational opportunities for the students from these areas, so that students do not have to reach North and South Delhi for higher education.
This is going to be a great moment for Delhi University, marking one of the significant milestones in its history while at the same time paying tribute to Veer Savarkar’s work in India’s freedom movement.
