MahaKumbh 2025: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Event
MahaKumbh 2025 is truly a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence for every individual who exists at this given point on this planet. The gravity of this exclusive event can be appreciated by realising that the next Mahakumbh of this kind is not until 144 years from now. In 2169, during the latter half of the next century.
Unhappy Voices Amidst the Celebrations
However, some despondent individuals do not seem as enthusiastic about the event. While it is understandable that personal choices and perspectives vary, going out of one’s way to dampen the joy and spirit of such a grand occasion is outright amateurish. To say the least.
Akhilesh Yadav’s Criticism of the Administration
Following this sentiment, S.P. supremo Akhilesh Yadav, before even extending warm wishes to the devotees for the Mahakumbh, chose to attach a negative connotation to the event.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Mr. Yadav pointed out how the administration is preventing the boatmen from accessing all the ghats. For context, the administration has permitted boats and ferries on just a few ghats to ensure security, safety of devotees, and a relatively hassle-free environment.
The Administration’s Perspective
Talking to TFI, an on-site officer who wished to remain anonymous explained, “We have done this to offer devotees a better experience.” The officer added, “Although the ferry community is more or less decent, some of them do get aggressive and try to trick people, even when we have a list for fares prepared.”
The Concerns of Boat Operators
In the BBC report quoted by Mr. Yadav on X, the boat operators appeared agitated. They expressed their desire to use all the ghats to access as many people as possible.
Is that wrong? Probably not. It’s their business, and they have the right to earn a good living from it. However, using their grievances to gain political brownie points does not reflect well on someone who leads the opposition in the state.
Safety Concerns Are Paramount
Security and safety concerns are not mere regulatory or bureaucratic formalities. They are significant and must be addressed. Just a few days ago, a major accident on the shores of the Ganga was narrowly avoided. A boat carrying two women and three children capsized near Arail Ghat.
The passengers screamed for help as they struggled in the water. PAC jawans on motorboat duty rushed to the scene, rescuing all six passengers.
The survivors were taken to Mela Hospital Someshwar, and DIG Kumbh Vaibhav Krishna awarded the jawans ₹15,000 for their swift and heroic action.
A Constructive Approach Would Have Been Better
As for Mr.Yadav a more thoughtful and constructive approach would have been to first extend warm wishes to the devotees. Acknowledging the significance of this once-in-a-lifetime event.
Following that, setting up a meeting with state authorities to discuss the concerns of the boat operators. This would have demonstrated both empathy and leadership.
Addressing such issues through dialogue rather than divisive rhetoric fosters cooperation and ensures that the interests of all stakeholders—devotees, boat operators, and the administration—are balanced effectively.
