Sharmistha Mukherjee, the daughter of former President Pranab Mukherjee, lashed out at the Congress party after its President Mallikarjun Kharge proposed the Prime Minister of establishing a separate memorial for former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh who left his body on 26th December. Sharmistha Mukherjee expressed her disappointment with the Congress party, accusing it of not giving her father the respect he deserved following his demise.
She pointed out that the Congress leadership did not even bother to convene a condolence meeting by the Congress Working Committee after her father’s demise in 2020. She also mentioned that the Congress leadership had misled her on the matter at the time. On the other hand, Sharmistha Mukherjee favored the appeal by Congress for the Centre to erect a memorial to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who breathed his last on Thursday, aged 92 years.
Talking on X, Sharmistha Mukherjee stated, “When Baba passed away, Congress didn’t even bother 2 call the CWC 4 condolence meeting. A senior leader told me it’s not done, 4 Presidents. That’s utter rubbish, as I learned later from Baba’s diaries that on KR Narayanan’s death, CWC was called, & condolence msg was drafted by Baba only.”
Her statement comes in the backdrop of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s demand for a designated funeral location for Manmohan Singh, where a memorial could be established. Sharmistha also supported the idea, stating, “Having said that, a memorial for Dr. Singh is a great idea. He deserves it & also Bharat Ratna, which Baba as President wanted 2 confer on him; but that didn’t happen perhaps due 2 reasons which don’t need to be spelled out.”

After her tweet, the trolls working for the Congress party came in with vile attacks against her. This is not the first time the Congress eceosystem has come attacking Sharmistha Mukherjee. She previously endured online attacks from Congress workers and supporters following the release of her book, Pranab My Father: A Daughter Remembers. In response, she addressed an open letter to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in February 2024, stating, “As someone who positions himself as a champion of Freedom of Expression, you should recognize that FoE encompasses not just receiving praise but also gracefully accepting criticism. However, you appear to have failed to convince even your own followers of this fundamental Right enshrined in our Constitution, which is also a core value of the Congress party. Your popular slogan, ‘Nafrat ke Bazaar me Mohabbat ki Dukan,’ seems to fall on deaf ears among your supporters, who unleash their ‘Nafrat’ on anyone daring to criticize you.”
