Recently a couple began trending on social media for an intriguing reason, the couple in question had emulated the legendary Swayamvar of Ram and Sita, and now a video of their dramatic entry is taking over the internet. In the viral Instagram video, a group of people struggle to lift a bow placed on a decorated table, then the groom walks in, and easily picks up the bow with his hands mimicking the scene when Shri Ram picked up the bow at Mata Sita’s swayamvar and won her hand.
The video has become instantly viral, with a variety of reactions coming in. While some celebrated the creativity invoking historical epics in modern celebrations, others did not quite agree with the sentiments. Comments ranged from jibes like “14 saal ka vanvas?” that referenced Lord Ram’s 14-year exile to outright criticism: “Absolute nonsense,” one commenter said, while another claimed, “Creativity increases, relationship decreases.” Comparing the dramatic entry to some Bollywood film scenes, a few pointed out that Prabhas’ “Adipurush” film was worse than this. Others defended the couple, saying, “What’s wrong? They’re enjoying the situation.”

This wedding entry is one among many creative ways through which couples are making their big-day entries memorable. Another recent viral video, which features a couple entering the venue riding Royal Enfield Bullet bikes, attracted praise for the boldness of the entry, especially as the bride made her entry riding her own bike.
Even though many couples these days are opting to make a unique wedding entries to gain social media popularity, they need to go back to their roots and embrace their traditions as well. It might be more beneficial to draw inspiration from the Vedas and ancient traditions which may lead to a meaningful connection with our rich cultural heritage, or perhaps this Swayamvar-themed entry by the couple reminds us of those values and stories embedded within history. Revisiting traditional ceremonies rather than novelty attractions could in some way help the society get back the essence of Hindu cultural identity.
