An ancient site connected to Lord Shiva has been found deep in the forests of Hirpora in the Shopian district of South Kashmir. A large rock with striking carvings and three Shivlinga figures set within small, temple-shaped niches has been discovered by locals and hikers who have gone into the area.
This place is accessible only on foot. The news has excited the locals, who are eager to get historians and archaeologists to examine the origin of the site and its importance in history.
Local resident Tasleem Ahmad shared further details about the discovery. He said that Shivlingas are placed within three openings carved into the rock, which resembles small temples. Locals refer to the site as Patulpal. The site dates back to centuries, maybe during the time of King Avantivarman and his brother Suryavarman, who are believed to have set up the Hirpora settlement over 600 years ago. “We want this site to be preserved,” Ahmad stressed, saying that officials had earlier visited the area for preliminary research.
According to experts and local historians, this discovery may open a new window into Kashmir’s ancient cultural and spiritual heritage, which is often relegated to the background by its stunning beauty and complex history. According to a representative of the Shopian district administration, the issue will be presented to the Archaeological Department for additional research and conservation.
A research scholar in archaeology, Aqeel Mushtaq, said that the discovery has once again thrown up the need to explore these sites in detail and protect them, as these relics are indicative of a great spiritual heritage of the region. Old sculptures, along with an assortment of Shivlingas, narrate tales of yesteryear. More research and preservation efforts would make this place a rich cultural resource, thereby adding to the awareness of the cultural heritage of Kashmir.
The locals and the historians are extremely enthusiastic and eager to learn more of the old history of the place. The site would someday turn out to be a landmark of tremendous historical and spiritual importance, for it would reveal Kashmir’s rich cultural legacy and old religious rituals if conserved and explored.
