‘Hizb-Ut-Tahrir’, a group that is banned in several countries, has been declared a terrorist organization by the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre. The outfit has been banned under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967.
“Pursuing PM Shri @narendramodi Ji’s policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism, the MHA today declared ‘Hizb-Ut-Tahrir’ as a ‘Terrorist Organisation’,” Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on X.
“The outfit is involved in various acts of terror, including radicalizing the gullible youths to join terrorist organizations and raise funds for terror activities, posing a serious threat to the national security and sovereignty of India. The Modi government is committed to securing Bharat by dealing the forces of terror with an iron fist,” Shah said.
In an official statement through a gazette notification, the Ministry of Home Affairs accused the outfit of promoting terrorism by using various social media platforms.
“HuT is an organization which aims to establish Islamic state and caliphate globally, including in India, by overthrowing democratically elected governments through jihad and terrorist activities by involving citizens of the country, which is a grave threat to the democratic setup and internal security of the country,” the MHA added.

NIA action against Hizb-ut-Tahrir cadre
On Wednesday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested a key accused in the Tamil Nadu Hizb-ut-Tahrir (HuT) case. It is related to spreading disaffection and secessionism “by promoting the ideology of the anti-India outfit” in Puducherry.
Hizb-ut-Tahrir, which was founded in Jerusalem in 1953, is a global Islamic group. It’s headquartered in Lebanon and operates in as many as 30 countries, including the UK, the US, Canada and Australia.
The HuT has a history of praising and celebrating attacks against Israel and Jews more widely.
A number of countries have already banned HuT for its subversive activities. They include Germany, Egypt, UK and several Central Asian and Arab countries.
