By 2050, superpowers like India will lead the world order, as prophesied by Former UK PM Tony Blair. During an interview, Blair also asserted that countries would need to fit in, in the new global order, which according to him, will be multipolar with India being one of the leading superpower.
Speaking with The Straits Times, Blair stated that countries will have to adjust to a multipolar world influenced by three nations namely India, the US, and China.
“You have got to decide where your country fits in the world, because it is going to be a world that is going to be multipolar,” he stated. “Three superpowers—effectively, America, China, and perhaps India—by the middle of this century.”
Blair, the prime minister of the United States from 1997 to 2007, noted that the world is far more complicated now than it was before, when the US was the unchallenged leader.
He clarified that a reevaluation of alliances and diplomatic strategies is required due to the way that the development of China and India is changing geopolitics. “You are going to have to build strong alliances that enable you to talk to these three superpowers with some level of equality,” he stated.
Blair also warned of the possibility of a wider conflict in response to the growing tensions in the Middle East, notably the confrontation between Israel and Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon. Because of what is currently occurring to the north of the country, the situation is extremely perilous and has the potential to get worse.
As the only realistic route to peace between Israel and Palestine, he reaffirmed his support for a two-state solution, saying, “The core to any solution, in my view, is to construct a day-after plan for Gaza that neither has the Israel Defence Forces nor Hamas running Gaza.”
Blair also urged Beijing to exercise restraint against its ally, Iran, but acknowledged that China might be a major player in peace talks. He noted that the attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7 had been “a long time in the making,” and he suggested that Iran might have played a role in its preparation.
