Air Marshal Amar Preet Singh, currently serving as the Vice Chief of Air Staff, has been appointed as the next Chief of Air Staff, is all set to assume office from September 30. This appointment underscores Singh’s extensive experience and leadership capabilities within one of the world’s largest air forces.
Air Marshal Singh’s journey in the IAF began after he graduated from the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Pune, where he was groomed for a career in military aviation. He was commissioned into the IAF as a fighter pilot in 1986 and has since amassed over 3,800 flying hours on a variety of aircraft, including the MiG-21 and MiG-29. His educational background also includes a stint at the Defence Services Staff College, where he honed his strategic thinking and operational planning skills.
One of Singh’s notable contributions to the IAF is his leadership of the MiG-29 Upgrade Project Management Team in Moscow, where he played a crucial role in modernizing this frontline fighter aircraft. His oversight of critical upgrades significantly enhanced the operational capabilities of the IAF, ensuring that it remains competitive in an evolving geopolitical landscape.
In addition to his work on the MiG-29, Singh served as the Project Director (Flight Test) at the National Flight Test Centre, where he was instrumental in the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas program. His involvement in the flight testing phase was vital to the aircraft’s operational readiness and subsequent induction into the IAF, marking a significant milestone in India’s push for self-reliance in defense production.
