Aug 19, The upcoming Haryana assembly elections would be the first test for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promise to bring over a lakh fresh apolitical faces into the political system of India.The state elections, which are to be held on October one, would witness if Modi is able to infuse fresh blood into the system, even as the BJP’s Central Election Committee plans to meet on 24th of this month to deliberate on candidate selection.
Modi has been very critical of the political dynasties in the country, especially that of the Congress, ever since he took over as the prime minister in May 2014.In his 11th address to the nation on the 78th Independence Day, Modi announced that he would introduce over a lakh new generation leaders who would have no political background. The BJP’s Central Election Committee is busy preparing for the elections with its senior leaders, including the party president JP Nadda, expected to attend the crucial meet. The Election Commission of India had announced the dates for assembly polls in Haryana, wherein all 90 assembly seats would have voting on October 1, and Jammu and Kashmir last week. This would be the first elections in Jammu and Kashmir after abrogation of the contentious article 370.
The polls will be held in three different phases on September 18, September 25 and October 1. The election results for both the assemblies would be declared on October 4.In Haryana, a total of 20,629 polling stations, including 7,132 urban and 13,497 rural, would be set up for over 2 crore voters, the EC had announced, adding that booths would be set up in multi-storied buildings in urban areas of the state.Haryana has 90 assembly constituencies, including 73 General and 17 Scheduled Castes (SC).
