Ashneer Grover, the former Managing Director and co-founder of the Fintech company Bharat Pe, and a notable figure from the reality TV show Shark Tank India, has recently been embroiled in legal troubles. The Delhi High Court imposed a Rs. 2 lakh fine on Grover for violating a court order by posting about Bharat Pe on social media. The court, led by Justice Rekha Palli, expressed severe displeasure at Grover’s actions, characterizing them as a blatant disregard for its directives.
Ashneer Grover, facing the court’s wrath, tendered an unconditional apology. However, the court’s acceptance of this apology came with a caveat; it was contingent upon Grover paying the imposed fine to the Delhi High Court Clerk Association. The background of this case is rooted in an ongoing dispute between Grover and Bharat Pe. In May 2023, the court had instructed both parties to abstain from using defamatory or unparliamentary language against each other, a directive stemming from a larger conflict involving allegations of financial impropriety. The case took a serious turn when Bharat Pe approached the High Court, claiming that Grover was using Twitter to attack the company following the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) by Delhi Police against him and his family. The FIR, filed on May 10, 2023, accused Grover, his wife, and other family members of misappropriating funds, alleging a substantial financial loss to Bharat Pe to the tune of approximately Rs. 81 crores.
