“Ensure safety of diplomats first”: Jaishankar’s crystal clear message to Canada
Share on FacebookShare on X

Indian diplomats in Canada: As said in The Godfather, “Confidence is Silent. Insecurities are Loud.” Now, apply this wisdom to the ongoing India-Canada standoff, and you’ll find a striking resonance.

In this conflict, there’s no need to spell out which side represents confidence and which exudes insecurity. The line is unmistakably drawn. As an unwavering Justin Trudeau spares no effort to stroke his ego, the poised yet resolute diplomat, S. Jaishankar, India’s Minister of External Affairs, has made his stance abundantly clear.

In a recent address to the media, Minister Jaishankar articulated India’s position with precision. He emphasized that India’s stand is not against the Canadian people as a whole; it’s directed at a specific segment of Canadian politics and the policies that emanate from it.

So welcome onboard, as delve deeper into the intricacies of this diplomatic showdown, examining the factors that have led to this point, and what the future may hold for these two nations.

“Pot Calling the Kettle Black”

In a recent media address, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar offered a clear and resolute response to Justin Trudeau’s bizarre allegations regarding the recall of 41 Canadian diplomats. The crux of the matter lies in Canada’s inability to ensure the safety and security of Indian diplomats, a challenge that strikes at the very heart of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, as per the statement of Dr. Jaishankar.

This straightforward assertion by Dr. Jaishankar comes in the wake of Canada’s decision to withdraw 41 of its diplomats from India and the abrupt suspension of walk-in services at its consulates in Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chandigarh. The latter move notably affects the processing of Canadian visas for Indian applicants.

The message from India is equally straightforward: the resumption of visa services is proportional to a tangible improvement in working conditions for Indian diplomats in Canada. In simple words, give safety to our diplomats, and get your privileges back! Dr. Jaishankar underscores the fundamental essence of the Vienna Convention, emphasizing the imperative of ensuring the safety and security of diplomats. At present, this fundamental tenet faces considerable challenges in Canada, where Indian diplomats find themselves in an environment that is far from secure.

In response to the so-called grievances expressed by the Trudeau administration, Dr. Jaishankar iterated that India is closely monitoring the situation in Canada. He made reference to threats issued by certain pro-Khalistan groups advocating for the murder of prominent Indian diplomats. These threats, which undermine the very essence of diplomatic norms and international law, have not gone unnoticed by Indian authorities.

Without specifically naming support for pro-Khalistan elements in Canada, Dr. Jaishankar made it clear that India’s concerns revolve around a distinct sector of Canadian politics and the policies that stem from it. In his own words, “The relationship right now is going through a difficult phase. But I do want to say the problems we have are with a certain segment of Canadian politics and the policies which flow from that.”

Jaishankar has a point!

The ongoing diplomatic standoff between India and Canada is a study in contrasts. India’s response, as articulated by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, stands out as a nuanced and measured counterpoint to the grandiose posturing emanating from the other side. It serves as a testament to the quiet confidence that India brings to the negotiation table.

Jaishankar also provided a clear rationale for India’s reluctance to acquiesce to the demands of the Trudeau administration. In his own words, he highlighted the fundamental importance of ensuring the safety and security of diplomats, a bedrock principle enshrined in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. He underscored that this fundamental tenet has been significantly challenged in Canada, where Indian diplomats find themselves in an environment far from secure. It’s an essential issue that India insists on rectifying before resuming visa services for Canadians.

Jaishankar’s stance serves as a pointed reminder to Canada that taking potshots at India without substantiated evidence is unwise, and to be fair, self-destructive. Ever since this diplomatic turmoil began with Justin Trudeau’s address to the Canadian Parliament, the Canadian side has been conspicuously lacking in credible, irrefutable evidence to substantiate their allegations in discussions with their Indian counterparts.

It appears as though Trudeau wishes to have his cake and eat it too. However, he may have overlooked a fundamental principle elucidated by Jaishankar months ago: India is not here to bend to the West’s will at the expense of its own interests.

Also read: Poilievre’s Wit Takes Aim at Trudeau’s India Misadventure

Moreover, Jaishankar has extended an olive branch, emphasizing that India is ready to provide assistance provided that Canada can supply specific information. He acknowledged the complex and interconnected nature of organized crime, secessionist forces, violence, and extremism that have plagued Canada in recent years. These concerns are intertwined, and India stands ready to engage with Canada on specific issues and information sharing.

While the situation may be complex, India’s expectations are straightforward: before any progress can be made, the safety and security of its diplomats must be assured, and evidence must support the claims made. India’s diplomatic strategy is one of quiet confidence, underscored by its emphasis on fundamental principles and due process. In contrast, the clamor and noise from the Canadian side appear to reveal underlying insecurities and hasty decision-making. In the end, it’s a battle of principles and measured responses against unsubstantiated claims and haste. Time will tell how these two nations navigate this diplomatic challenge.
