In the not-so-distant past, Delhi Police’s Special Cell apprehended three individuals with suspected ties to terrorism, sending shockwaves across the nation. These arrests were not just about thwarting a potential terror attack; they also unraveled a chilling connection to the gruesome riots that shook North-Eastern Delhi in early 2020. One of the key players in this complex web is Arshad Warsi, an engineering student from Jamia Millia Islamia. As the details emerge, it becomes evident that the genesis of the riots carries an unexpected dimension – an ISIS angle.
Just recently, on the 3rd of October, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) made significant arrests of three individuals linked to the ISIS Pune terror module. Their sinister plot aimed at orchestrating terror attacks on Indian soil. The prime accused, Shahanawaz, had a staggering bounty of Rs 3 lakh on his head. According to Delhi Police, the module’s mission was to carry out terror attacks across India under the instructions of foreign-based handlers. Shahnawaz, alias Shafi Uzzama, was apprehended by the Delhi Police’s Special Cell from a hideout in the national capital.
Adding to the gravity of the situation, the NIA discovered chemical substances and other incriminating materials suspected to be used for fabricating improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The NIA had previously announced cash rewards of Rs 3 lakh each for information leading to the capture of Shahnawaz and three other terror suspects, namely Rizwan Abdul, Haji Ali, and Abdulla Faiyaz Shaikh, alias Diaperwala, along with Talha Liyakat Khan. Reports indicate that Shahnawaz, Abdulla, and Rizwan were radicalized through the Telegram app and intended to sow violence and terror in the country.

So, who is Arshad Warsi, and why his arrest has opened a can of worms in the 2020 Delhi Riots case? Mohammad Arshad Warsi, hailing from Jharkhand and holding a BTech degree from Aligarh Muslim University, currently pursues a PhD program at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), specializing in ‘Islamic Principles in Management.’ However, this seemingly ordinary student now faces charges of being an ISIS terrorist involved in planning bomb blasts in Delhi alongside other ISIS affiliates. Intriguingly, Arshad Warsi’s involvement in the Delhi anti-Hindu riots of 2020 comes to light as well, painting a disturbing picture.

According to the chargesheet filed by the Delhi Police, the day after the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) was presented in both houses of parliament on December 4th, Sharjeel Imam formed a group called the Muslim Students of JNU (MSJ). Sharjeel was not only the main member but also the mastermind behind this group’s creation. The chats retrieved from Sharjeel’s and other accused’s phones reveal that Sharjeel Imam and Arshad Warsi, a student at Jamia, maintained constant communication. Sharjeel was also in touch with a “radical communal group” known as Students of Jamia (SOJ).

On December 6th, pamphlets authored by Sharjeel Imam himself were distributed in the Jama Masjid area by the MSJ group. Chats between Sharjeel Imam and Arshad Warsi uncovered this fact. The pamphlets had a communal tone and aimed to incite discord within the Muslim community by invoking the Supreme Court’s decision in the Ram Janmabhoomi case.
The recent arrests and unfolding events underscore the disturbing nature of the Delhi anti-Hindu riots of 2020. While initially appearing as a local communal conflict, the ISIS link and involvement of individuals like Arshad Warsi and Sharjeel Imam add a sinister layer to the narrative. As the investigation continues, it is crucial to remain vigilant and committed to maintaining peace and harmony in our society.
