Abhishek Manu Singhvi forced to delete his tweet criticizing Congress’ “Divide and Rule” policy

Abhishek Manu Singhvi tweet: Congress’s recent push for dividing India along caste and communal lines is nothing new. In their pursuit of this divisive agenda, they have encountered opposition and contradictions even from within their own ranks.

Just recently, Congress attempted to rally behind the controversial concept of a caste census, using the slogan, “Jitni Abaadi, Utna Haq” (As many people, that much right). This move was met with sharp criticism from Prime Minister Modi, who didn’t hold back in condemning it.

However, what took the Congress High Command by surprise was when senior advocate and former Minister Abhishek Manu Singhvi criticized them for their absurd concept, echoing sentiments similar to those expressed by Prime Minister Modi. Tweet of Abhishek Manu Singhvi, though now deleted, spoke volumes: “Equality of opportunity is never the same as equality of outcomes. People endorsing ‘Jitni Abadi Utna haq’ have to first completely understand the consequences of it. It will eventually culminate into majoritarianism.”

This tweet sent shockwaves through the Congress party. They swiftly distanced themselves from Singhvi’s remarks. Congress’s General Secretary in-charge of communication, Jairam Ramesh, issued a clarification, asserting that Singhvi’s opinions did not reflect the official stance of the Congress party.

However, this clarification was more of an attempt to pressure Abhishek Manu Singhvi into submission rather than a genuine change in stance. Shortly after, Singhvi deleted his tweet, maintaining that he did not differ from the party’s position. He reiterated his support for the Congress party’s demand for a caste-based census.

The Congress forced Abhishek Manu Singhvi to delete his tweet because it was making more sense than the handout Rahul Gandhi is reading from these days. In his tweet Abhishek Manu Singhvi explained, “I didn’t take a different stand. We have supported it, and we will continue to support it. All the Court orders that have come in say that the decision has to be taken on the basis of facts. How will that happen if there are no facts? So, for facts, it is essential for the caste census to take place.”

Dividing the population based on caste and communal lines is not a new tactic for Congress. It has been a recurring theme in their political playbook for years. However, what makes the recent push for a caste census particularly concerning is the audacious slogan, “Jitni Abaadi, Utna Haq,” which essentially implies that individuals’ rights should be determined by their population size.

Prime Minister Modi wasted no time in critiquing this concept. He argued that equality of opportunity should not be confused with equality of outcomes. In fact, he even maintained that going by that logic, Hindus, who are the majority in this country, should have the first right on all the resources. Will Congress accept that?

In this very context, candid tweet of Abhishek Manu Singhvi resonated with many, and his observation about the potential consequences of the slogan struck a chord. It highlighted the importance of considering the long-term ramifications of divisive policies. However, Singhvi’s subsequent deletion of the tweet suggests a degree of pressure from within the Congress party to toe the party line.

The Congress party’s attempt to distance itself from Singhvi’s remarks is a classic political maneuver, aimed at preserving party unity while avoiding public dissent. The statement issued by Jairam Ramesh, claiming that Singhvi’s opinions did not represent the party’s stance, was an effort to mitigate the fallout from the controversy.

It is crucial to recognize that a caste-based census, while providing valuable demographic data, also carries significant risks. It has the potential to reinforce caste identities and divisions, which could further exacerbate existing social tensions. Moreover, it may inadvertently lead to policies that favor certain castes at the expense of others, ultimately undermining the goal of achieving equality and social justice.

Congress’s recent advocacy for a caste-based census is part of a long-standing pattern of exploiting caste and communal divisions for political gain. While they may argue that it is necessary for informed policymaking, the potential risks associated with such a census cannot be ignored. It is essential for India’s political leaders to approach this issue with caution and a deep understanding of its potential consequences for the country’s social fabric and unity.
