Udayanidhi Stalin’s vitriol on Sanatana Dharma is nauseating

Udayanidhi Stalin’s vitriol on Sanatana Dharma is nauseating
Share on FacebookShare on X

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has gained notoriety for its strong stance on social justice. However, one of its members, Udayanidhi Stalin, has taken this stance to a new extreme, drawing comparisons to controversial historical figures. During a public address, he made inflammatory remarks about Sanatan Dharma, sparking outrage and heated debates.

In a statement that shocked many, Udayanidhi Stalin boldly proclaimed, “Mosquitoes, dengue, flu, malaria, corona – we should not oppose these things. They’ve to be eradicated completely.” But it was his next statement that raised even more eyebrows: “The same is the case with Sanatanam (Hinduism). Our first work should be to abolish/eradicate Sanatanam instead of opposing it. So, my appreciation to you all for giving an apt title to the meeting.”

This inflammatory rhetoric left no room for interpretation. Udayanidhi Stalin, an alleged actor and entitled dynast, compared eradicating Sanatan Dharma to exterminating diseases like malaria. Such a comparison is not only deeply offensive but also reminiscent of the extreme measures taken by Hitler and his Nazis against the Jews during World War II.

While being a Christian is not a crime, as Udayanidhi Stalin himself confessed, and every individual has the right to practice their chosen religion, deriding any faith and even hinting at the idea of “open genocide” is a troubling matter altogether.

Bring it on. I am ready to face any legal challenge. We will not be cowed down by such usual saffron threats. We, the followers of Periyar, Anna, and Kalaignar, would fight forever to uphold social justice and establish an egalitarian society under the able guidance of our… https://t.co/nSkevWgCdW

What’s even more concerning is that instead of condemning Udayanidhi’s hateful remarks, some members of the I.N.D.I.A. alliance, particularly the Congress, chose to defend him. One of these defenders was Karti Chidambaram, who stated, “There was no call for ‘Genocide’ against anyone; this is a mischievous spin. In the common parlance of TN ‘Sanatan Dharm’ means Caste Hierarchical Society. Why is it that everyone who is batting for ‘SD’ comes from the privileged segment who are beneficiaries of the ‘Hierarchy’?”

While there may be legitimate concerns about caste hierarchies within Hinduism, equating the eradication of Sanatan Dharma to social justice is a gross oversimplification and fails to address the complexity of these issues. Uprooting an entire faith is a drastic and controversial solution that cannot be justified in the name of social justice.

Even more troubling is Udayanidhi Stalin’s refusal to apologize for his inflammatory remarks. He insisted, “Sanatan Dharma is a principle that divides people in the name of caste and religion. Uprooting Sanatan Dharma is upholding humanity and human equality… I spoke on behalf of the oppressed & marginalized, who suffer due to Sanatan Dharma.”

However, many individuals from various backgrounds and ideologies vehemently disagreed with his stance. K Annamalai, in a post, stated, “The only resolve that the Gopalapuram Family has is to accumulate wealth beyond the State GDP. Thiru [Udayanidhi Stalin], you, your father, or his or your ideologue have a bought-out idea from Christian missionaries, and the idea of those missionaries was to cultivate dimwits like you to parrot their malicious ideology. Tamil Nadu is a land of spiritualism. The best you can do is to hold a Mic in an event like this & rant out your frustration!”

Atul Mishra, founder of TFI Media, raised legal concerns about Udayanidhi Stalin’s statements. He warned, “Listen Stalin Junior, your statement on Sanatan Dharma is not just an expression of an opinion; it is hate speech, and no quotes or books will save you in court. Go read Section 153A and Section 295A of the Indian Penal Code. You are going to jail. Only to be a Twitter hero. It’s not just about confronting challenges in court; it’s about-facing criminal charges and dealing with the severe consequences that come with them.”

In a diverse and pluralistic society like India, where people from various faiths and backgrounds coexist, it is vital to promote tolerance, understanding, and respectful discourse. Inflammatory statements that target a specific religion only serve to deepen divisions and foster animosity among communities.

Ultimately, public figures like Udayanidhi Stalin should be held accountable for their words and actions, particularly when they touch upon sensitive religious and cultural matters. It remains to be seen how this controversy will unfold and whether it will lead to a more constructive and respectful dialogue about the complex issues of caste hierarchies and social justice within Indian society.
